This immersive experience offered students a hands-on exploration of the various aspects of criminal justice, going beyond the image of traditional law enforcement.

<p>This success story is about a unique partnership between Houston’s progressive technology leaders and CIOs and LSC-University Park. The Houston Chapter of the Society of Information Management (SIM) held its 9th Annual CIO Charity Golf Tournament Monday, April 25, at the Golf Club of Houston. The event scored $25,000 for Lone Star College-University Park.&nbsp;However, there is much more to this philanthropic relationship.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last Friday, May 13th, was a triumphant morning for Lone Star College-University Park – when more than 2,000 attended the 2022 commencement ceremony at Berry Center in Cypress. Large gatherings were back for the first time since 2019, and LSC-University Park celebrated its first in-person graduation since the pandemic. The Lone Star College system awarded nearly 9,500 students a degree or certificate, including a record-breaking 1,010 from LSC-University Park. &nbsp;</p>

<p>As part of a grant-based project called “A Day in the Field: How to Mitigate Flooding and Maintain Healthy Streams,” students made one-on-one connections with members of LSC-University Park’s math, biology, chemistry, physics, and geology faculty and staff. They also collected data, learned about local streams from an interdisciplinary perspective, and provided solutions to drainage and flooding concerns in the area.</p>

<p>Jamie Margolin, the Colombian-American organizer, activist and author, visited the Lone Star College-University Park campus on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Margolin's book Youth To Power is the 2021-2022 campus read at LSC-University Park and&nbsp;serves as a reminder of the shared passion amongst the&nbsp;faculty and staff, who understand that communal reading can be transformative when&nbsp;shared ideas take root and grow.</p>

Electronic sports, or gaming, is trending nationally and internationally, thanks in part to the pandemic, raising the bar for competitive video game play. Construction began this summer on a new eSports lounge, which will enhance the competitive gaming landscape at the college.</p>

<p>Deep underground the greater Houston area is an intricate piping system transporting materials to sustain our energy lifestyle. To support that piping system&nbsp;above ground, Lone Star College-University Park is training students to safeguard the metal piping from one of its biggest threats: corrosion.</p>

<p style="text-align:start">Most people plan to travel after retirement, but Linda Flake Jackson, a 72-year-old from Houston, had another goal in mind—earn a college degree.&nbsp;And she did. Jackson recently graduated from Lone Star College-University Park with an Associate of Arts field of study degree in Criminal Justice.</p>

<p>Vistas Early College High School (ECHS) offers students a clear path and a unique opportunity to complete a high school diploma and earn up to&nbsp;60 college credit hours&nbsp;toward an&nbsp;associate degree with LSC-University Park&nbsp;– with the cost of tuition covered.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park is tapping into some of the brightest business and marketing minds across a wide variety of industries with the creation of a Marketing Advisory Council.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park celebrated the graduation of a record number of students in the college's eight-year history. The college recognized 1,128 graduates for completing their degrees or certificates during its virtual Commencement Ceremony held Friday, May 14, via Facebook Live.</p>

<p>A common joke in Houston is that if you don’t like the weather, just wait a few minutes. It will change. This fall, students at Lone Star College-University Park will have the opportunity to learn about the ‘how’ and ‘why’ of the city’s complicated weather patterns and systems, as well as weather forecasting, air pollution and climate change.</p>

<p>When Irene Falcon learned about the customized&nbsp;associate&nbsp;of arts in teaching (AAT) program offered by Lone Star College-University Park, she knew&nbsp;it&nbsp;was&nbsp;her&nbsp;best chance to&nbsp;fulfill&nbsp;her&nbsp;dream of becoming a teacher. Falcon has worked as a paraprofessional&nbsp;and, out of necessity, a substitute teacher, for the Royal Independent&nbsp;School&nbsp;District.</p>

<p style="text-align:start">Throughout 2020 and into 2021, performing arts have been dealt a blow from the ongoing pandemic, but the Lone Star College-University Park Department of Drama has taken the phrase “the show must go on” to heart. Building on the college’s reputation for innovative thinking, including novel techniques to ensure everyone’s safety, the department will give audiences a one-of-a-kind virtual production of “The Actor’s Nightmare,” opening Thursday, April 29, via Webex.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When Zuriyah Logan graduates from Klein Cain High School this May, she’s heading to Dartmouth University with a full scholarship. She’s also taking more than 40&nbsp;hours of college credit with her from dual credit classes completed through Lone Star College-University Park.</p>

<p class="CxSpFirst" style="text-align:start">Continuing on a tradition of excellence and&nbsp;top-notch performance regionally, nationally and internationally, Lone Star College-University Park’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society chapter, Beta Upsilon Nu, was recognized with two international Hallmark Awards at the PTK Catalyst 2021, held virtually April 8-10.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ivan Ramos-Medina, assistant professor of math at Lone Star College-University Park, believes GradUP provides a clear perspective for faculty, staff, and administrators. The primary focus at LSC-University Park is student success.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Who looks forward to another Zoom meeting? In a COVID-19 world, the implications of human interaction in a digital landscape take on new meaning. Though many technologies are designed with human connection and expression in mind, experience has shown that technology can also isolate and repress.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start">Alexandria Flores is in her second year at Lone Star College-University Park and majoring in business administration. Alexandria is currently exploring different career paths and taking various classes to expand her horizons. She grew up in California and moved to Texas when she was ten. She works full-time at a preschool as a teacher's aide and enjoys being involved within her community and LSC-University Park.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>LSC-University Park’s annual Innovation Week showcases how innovative practices are being applied in specific industries so that today’s students are prepared for tomorrow’s evolving career opportunities. This year will bring America’s Top Young Scientist and Time Magazine’s first “Kid of the Year,” Gitanjali Rao, to the college virtually as the keynote speaker.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Pursuing innovation and setting bold goals has been a hallmark for Lone Star College-University Park since its founding in 2012. So, it is not surprising that the college has&nbsp;been named as a finalist for two prestigious national awards that recognize exceptional work among the nation’s two-year colleges.</p>

<p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start">Sameia Rahmath was born in India, but raised in Qatar. She moved to the U.S. only two years ago. She is currently in her second year at LSC-University Park&nbsp;and intends to graduate with an Associate of Arts before transferring to University of Houston's Bauer College to study business. <p>Deserving students at Lone Star College-University Park will soon be the beneficiaries&nbsp;of the generosity of the Champions Sunrise Rotary Club, thanks to its recent decision to direct proceeds from its annual golf tournament to the college in the form of student scholarships.</p>

<p>Dr. Mosadi Porter has been a contributor to the field of higher education for over 20 year, currently serving as the Associate Dean for Admissions and Outreach. This encompasses admissions, outreach, three campus service centers and orientation.</p>

<p style="text-align:start">When asked what GradUP means to her, Christina Cross, associate professor of business at Lone Star College-University Park, says that it is an initiative that allows faculty, staff and administrators to align themselves around one specific goal: graduation.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="CxSpFirst" style="text-align:start">Before the global pandemic, Enrique Paz was on the cusp of transferring to a four-year university. As COVID-19 undermined the best laid of plans, Paz soon realized his future looked bright and he was exactly where he needed to be: Lone Star College-University Park.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Dr. Christa Spears is originally from New Jersey and has&nbsp;worked for ExxonMobil in Houston as an exploration geologist. This position took her around the world, exploring for oil and gas in politically and economically-challenged environments. Her responsibilities included drilling on- and offshore wells, working with assets, and negotiating the terms for commercial transactions. While ExxonMobil offered her a fun and exciting career, her true passion is teaching.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start">Erandi Prashani Mayadunne teaches chemistry at LSC-University Park. She was born in Sri Lanka and moved to the U.S. to pursue her doctoral degree in analytical chemistry at Oklahoma State University.&nbsp;Her passion for teaching began when she was in graduate school working as a teaching assistant. Helping students understand difficult chemistry concepts brings her great joy.</p>

<p class="CxSpFirst" style="text-align:start">Lone Star College-University Park announces the appointment of Dr. Jess P. Kelly as dean of its math and sciences division, following an extensive national search, as well as interviews with faculty, staff and administration.</p>

<p>Etienne is a native Houstonian and a freshman in his second semester at Lone Star College-University Park. A member of the Student Success Institute, he will graduate with an Associate of Science degree and plans to transfer to Rice University.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With over a decade in education, Dr. Sawyerr is always sharing her knowledge and expertise through conferences and podcasts throughout the Houston area. Dr. Sawyerr enjoys working with children and at-risk youth. Her mantra is “mental health is the new wealth.” In her spare time, she likes to give back to the community by mentoring students interested in mental health concerns.</p>

<p>When Debanhi Villarreal Lopez, a student at Lone Star College-University Park, heard that loaner laptops were available for enrolled students, she knew her chances for successfully completing her semester had just increased.</p>

<p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start">Allyson Bullock is a native Houstonian who has gained valuable experience in various industries. As a former publicist for Miss Louisiana, higher education administrator, and health care community liaison, she developed a niche for people development. Her passion for empowering people has made her a master motivator and team builder, and her love for humanity and change is infectious.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the age of 14, Lone Star College-University Park student Andrea Luna Gonzalez, together with her father and stepmother, departed El Salvador for Houston, Texas. Their destination was a certainty, yet the plans for her education were unclear.&nbsp;</p>

<p class="CxSpFirst" style="text-align:start">Dr. Jermaine&nbsp;Johnson, professor of criminal justice at Lone Star College-University Park,&nbsp;views&nbsp;life through a different lens – one that&nbsp;looks for&nbsp;hope&nbsp;over&nbsp;hopelessness&nbsp;and opportunity in every challenge or roadblock.&nbsp;With GradUP, an initiative to bolster student success and increase graduation rates by 300% in three years, in mind, Johnson approaches his students with his lemon-to-lemonade attitude, earning their trust, and helping them find their individual paths to success.</p>

<p class="paragraph" style="text-align:start">Kevin Carreathers was raised in a family that valued education. He recognizes that his upbringing has played a significant role in how he views the world – and the importance of education in getting ahead. He has been involved in higher education at a variety of institutions, but with a focus on student affairs and diversity.</p>

<p>Throughout February’s Black History Month, Lone Star College-University Park will host several virtual events to celebrate African Americans' achievements and their pivotal role in U.S. history. Centered on a common theme of "Learning from the Past to Influence Our Future," the events encourage engagement in honest, relevant conversations about race and marginalized communities.</p>

<p style="text-align:start">If Lone Star College-University Park students need help when they struggle with a class assignment, Ana comes to the rescue, leading them to online tutors. Ana also informs students about virtual campus events taking place throughout the week. She even reminds them about upcoming college holidays.</p>

<p style="text-align:start">For Lone Star College-University Park’s Kristen Khalaf, professor of developmental English, GradUP is not only a goal of reaching a 50% three-year graduation rate. <p class="CxSpFirst">Jesse Fitzgerald Rodriguez, a 2016 Lone Star College-University Park graduate, has become a published author with the recent release of "Develop a Genius Mindset: Unleash Your Full Potential and Achieve Unimaginable Success," a self-help book from Purist Publishing.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park is offering both in-person and virtual student services during the upcoming winter break to make sure its students are prepped and ready for the upcoming Spring 2021 semester. Whether online or in-person, staff members will offer several services over the holiday break for students to stay on track during 2021.</p>

<p>Philip Lee, Lone Star College-University Park founding faculty and professor of business,&nbsp;retires this month after 18 years with the Lone Star College System. Among Lee’s many achievements were the creation of two functioning robots, both of which will stay on campus after he leaves, representative of technology integration and innovation important to LSC-University Park.</p>

<p>he Society of Information Management Houston Chapter (SIM Houston) recently dedicated $20,000 in proceeds from its 7th Annual Houston CIO Charity Golf Tournament to support Lone Star College-University Park students in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields.</p>

<p>This fall, Maggie Espinal entered the doors of the Energy &amp; Manufacturing Institute each Saturday morning and marveled at the doors that life had opened for her. When she retired from the U.S. Army in 2016 with more than 20 years of service, she didn’t know that her path would lead in a new direction for her career and life.&nbsp;</p>

<p style="text-align:start">When Lone Star College-University Park announced its bold GradUP initiative to bolster students’ success and increase graduation rates by 300% in three years, Methias Plank, professor of political science, knew that this would require a holistic approach in his teaching. Plank met the GradUP initiative challenge with intentionality, not only in his teaching methods, but in all of his interactions with students.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park President Shah Ardalan, Ed.D., has been named to the Board of Trustees of the College Board, a mission-driven, not-for-profit organization that connects students to college success and opportunity.</p>

<p>In 2014, when Lone Star College-University Park opened its Honors College, Brian Kyser, executive director, knew it would compete for many of the best and brightest students in the area. In just six years, LSC-University Park has earned significant recognition for cultivating a one-of-a-kind academic experience via the Honors College.</p>

<p>Naomi Joubert’s experience in the Air Force included high-stress assignments such as participating in security detail for Presidential and top-level officer visits. After several years of service, however, she experienced a traumatic back injury that effectively ended her military career with a medical discharge.</p>

<p>At Lone Star College-University Park, student success is at the forefront for faculty, staff and administration. In 2018, LSC-University Park instituted the GradUP call-to-action to move the needle on student graduation rates by 300% in three years. For Dr. Bryn Benford, LSC-University Park professor of geology, helping her students stay focused on and connected to their goals is key to helping them reach graduation.</p>

<p>LSC-University Park will highlight ways that organizations and individuals can thrive during uncertainty with a free, half-day virtual symposium, Living Innovation, on Friday, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park graduate Heather Rouat is familiar with adversity. At the age of 14, Rouat left France and crossed the Atlantic Ocean to the United States without speaking English. However, with a gift for language and communication, Rouat learned English quickly. Only six years after her arrival, Rouat’s never-give-up spirit and LSC-University Park’s supportive environment helped her reach graduation in May 2020.</p>

<p style="text-align:start">Sonia was the first in her family to graduate from college – after emigrating from Colombia earlier in life. Now, she is the President &amp; CEO of a global, full-spectrum technology consulting firm based in Houston. She enthusiastically supports Lone Star College-University Park and serves on the LSC-University Park Community Advisory Council.</p>

<p>Frank Rodriguez, a professor and chair of the college's math department, has been working with Lone Star College since 2007 and is one of the founding faculty members of LSC-University Park. Since starting at the college, he has undertaken several other projects and is now one of the co-advisors for Phi Theta Kappa.</p>

<p><span lang="EN">At just 17-years-old, Ashley, a first-generation American, was the first in her family to attend college when she enrolled at LSC-University Park. Now in her last semester, Ashley was voted President of the Puente Club and is a member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. She is also an Outreach Mentor in the Office of Student Success and a LSC Foundation Gala Scholarship recipient.</span></p>

<p>Neev Dash has loved cars since he was a small boy. As he grew older and learned about the impact of gas engines on the environment, he was motivated to make a difference. Fast forward several years, and Dash, who is a dual credit student entering his second college year at Lone Star College-University Park – and his senior year at iSchool High – embarked on a project to create an affordable and accessible way for the average American to drive an eco-friendly car.&nbsp;</p>

<p style="text-align:start">One way to help ensure student success, says Philip Lee, Lone Star College-University Park professor of business, is to customize the way a course is taught to each student in the class. While this may sound impossible to achieve, Lee incorporates innovative techniques to make sure it happens. And he points to the positive comments of his students – and their increased interest in finishing what they start – as proof that it works.</p>

<p>There is still time for students to register for the fall 2020 semester at Lone Star College-University Park. Next Start courses are scheduled to begin the week of Monday, Sept. 21, for 12-week options and the week of Monday, Oct. 19, for eight-week options.</p>

<p class="CxSpFirst" style="text-align:start">One of the most honored traditions at Lone Star College-University Park is the annual 9/11 ceremony that memorializes those who died in the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The ceremony also recognizes those who serve as first responders.</p>

To help address this critical need, Lone Star College-University Park held “Leo’s Drive-UP Meal” distribution – which included a gourmet meal for its students.</p>

Just ask Marilyn Rubio, the newly-elected president of LSC-University Park’s Student Government Association (SGA). The experiences of those around her not only led her to LSC-University Park, but also to growing into one of the college’s active student leaders.</p>

<p>Donnelly, a 2017 Faculty Excellence Award winner, takes the GradUP mission of raising graduation rates by 300% to heart. As an instructor of EDUC 1300 - Learning Framework: First Year Experience, Donnelly has been at the forefront of communicating the GradUP message to first-time-in-college students at LSC-University Park.</p>

<p>With online learning modalities taking center stage this fall in the midst of COVID-19, Lone Star College-University Park faculty are using their wealth of experience in the field to guide students to success. One of the college’s faculty is using her expertise to help educators across the country prepare for virtual teaching and its unique challenges.</p>

<p>With the fall 2020 semester beginning Monday, Aug. 24, Lone Star College-University Park is forging ahead with its annual Roar Week activities for the first week of classes Aug. 24 - 29. Though the semester will commence largely online, the college is using innovative, virtual solutions to continue tradition and welcome students to the new semester.</p>

<p>LSC-University Park has long been known for encouraging its faculty, staff and students to pursue innovative programs and services. Most recently, the college was recognized for its innovative Safe Zone program, which fosters an inclusive environment for LGBTQ+ students, as one of the 2019 - 2020 Innovation of the Year recipients from the prestigious League for Innovation in the Community College.</p>

<p>Despite the ongoing effects of a global pandemic in COVID-19, faculty are adapting and fine-tuning their coursework and classroom approaches to better serve students. For Dr. Christa Spears, associate professor of geology, flexibility, building relationships with students, relating material to students and active-learning are key in all teaching modalities.</p>

<p>Struggles or obstacles and how they are overcome define a person. They can cause one to stumble or they can cause one to thrive. The latter was the case for Tooba Narejo, who immigrated to the U.S. six years ago from Karachi, Pakistan, with her husband and three small children. While navigating a new country and managing expectations of motherhood, Narejo graduated with honors from Lone Star College-University Park in 2019.</p>

<p>In the twentieth year of its founding, S.A.F.E. Diversity Communities is honoring LSC-University Park President Dr. Shah Ardalan with its prestigious 2020 College President of the Year Award for his dedication to improving the lives of students with disabilities.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park is not allowing COVID-19 to stop its fight against student food insecurity. The college is announcing a partnership with the United Network for Collegiate Pantry Sharing (UNCPS). Through local restaurants, UNCPS will provide short-term food relief at no cost to LSC-University Park students experiencing food insecurity during the pandemic.</p>

<p>The Lone Star College-University Park community is coming together to celebrate the accomplishments of the college’s graduates with the Class of 2020 Virtual Celebration Thursday, May 28, at 5 p.m. on&nbsp;Facebook&nbsp;Premiere.</p>

<p>As COVID-19 forces organizations to pivot, Lone Star College-University Park has met the challenge in stride with student success at the forefront.&nbsp;From online seminars to live open forums, all resources ensure employees are taking care of themselves, have the knowledge they require to move to an online format for the foreseeable future and, in turn, are better able to continue providing students with an academically and socially rich experience despite the circumstances.</p>

<p>The LSC-University Park music program continues to grow with the pulsing sound of the college’s Percussion Ensemble, directed by Yamaha Artist Lamar Burkhalter. With performances at the front gates of Minute Maid Park during postseason, NRG Stadium, and outside Jones Hall for the opening of “Stomp,” you may have found yourself tapping your foot to their rhythm. Since 2018, the group has helped students pursue their passions for music and has provided unique performances throughout Houston.</p>

<p class="CxSpFirst">LSC-University Park’s Black Student Union, Student Success Institute (SSI) and Student Learning Resource Center (SLRC) are hosting multiple events and promotions throughout the month, all tailored to educate students, faculty, staff and community members about African American culture and history.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park is proud to announce the opening of Leo’s Shelf, an on-site food pantry designed to serve campus community members with free grab-and-go meals and snacks, as well as nonperishable pantry items and personal hygiene products.</p>

<p>ROAR WEEK&nbsp;will kick off Jan. 13&nbsp;with several events to welcome students to campus!&nbsp;Students are encouraged to attend to network, win swag and receive free food!</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park art professor Kari Breitigam is celebrating a significant milestone with her exhibition, “In Search of Serenity.” The exhibition is on display through Saturday, Jan. 11, at the Pearl Fincher Museum of Fine Arts Marilyn Morgan Hillery Community Gallery (Pearl), located only minutes from the college in northwest Houston.</p>

<p>As part of holiday season celebrations, Minuti Coffee graciously donated 40 turkeys and hams to Lone Star College-University Park employees. The recipients consisted of full-time and part-time faculty and staff members.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This fall Lone Star College-University Park welcomed students to its latest addition, the Lion’s Den. The multipurpose student space continues the college’s history of producing innovative and responsive facilities that meet the needs of students and the community.</p>

<p>On Saturday, Nov. 16, Lone Star College (LSC)&nbsp;students, faculty and staff joined thousands of community members at LSC-University Park to participate in the 2019 American Heart Association’s (AHA) Northwest Harris County (NWHC) Heart Walk. This is the fifth consecutive year LSC-University Park has hosted the Heart Walk, which engages the community to raise awareness and over $300,000 per year for a great cause.</p>

<p>LSC-University Park’s ReadUP program will host a signature author event featuring Dr. Mona Hanna-Attisha Tuesday, Nov. 19. The event is open to LSC-University Park students, employees and community partners. As part of the annual program, the college is focusing attention on environmental issues and the impact on underserved communities.</p>

<p>Winners of the Second Life for Books recycled art project were recently announced by the Student Learning Resource Center (SLRC).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Gene Haas Foundation recently awarded $10,000 in scholarships to Lone Star College-University Park. The scholarship will benefit students who are enrolled in various stages of the college’s machining program and who are working toward an Associate of Applied Science degree in machining technology.</p>

<p>Recent Lone Star College-University Park (LSC-University Park) graduate Isabella Hearn is celebrating a life-changing accomplishment after receiving over $600,000 in college scholarship awards. Hearn credits LSC-University Park’s affiliation with iSchool High with helping her to overcome adversity to achieve her education goals.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park President Dr. Shah Ardalan, LSC Board of Trustees Chair Dr. Alton Smith, and vice president of Instruction at LCS-University Park Kathy Cecil-Sanchez accepted a $5,000 donation from Shining Stars Guild (SSG) leaders to help students receive an impactful education at LSC-University Park.</p>

The thought of being homeless, suffering from a disease, and working through a disability might cause some to shutter, but Houstonian Alex Jensen faced these obstacles head on and thrived at Lone Star College-University Park.</p>

<p>When Gabrielle Juniel received her Associate of Arts degree at Lone Star College-University Park’s commencement ceremony earlier this month, she reached a major milestone for herself and her close-knit family. And she did so at only 15 years old.</p>

<p>Lone Star College-University Park student and recent LSC graduate Emil Gillett is riding a wave of success after being accepted into a prestigious summer internship program at Pennsylvania State University.&nbsp;</p>

<p>LSC-Univeristy Park student&nbsp;Anthony D’Souza graduated this spring with an Honors Associate of Science degree and $40,000 per year toward the completion of a bachelor’s degree at Rice University. D’Souza was awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which helps top community college students continue their education and makes him eligible to apply for $50,000 annually for graduate school.</p>

Bradley McWilliams YMCA and LSC-University Park joined forces this summer to establish the Children’s Academy Scholarship Program. Noble Energy provided a $20,000 grant to cover full-time childcare tuition at the YMCA Children’s Academy at University Park.</p>

<p>With only a semester under its belt, the Lone Star College-University Park chapter of Psi Beta has earned national recognition.</p> <p>The national psychology honor society for community colleges has given the LSC-University Park chapter one of only nine Chapter Excellence Awards for the 2014-2015 academic year. The group held its first induction in March.</p>

<p>Students will have their eyes on the western sky this fall when the physics department at LSC-University Park introduces two astronomy courses.</p> <p>Bill Madigan, a retired nuclear physicist, will teach Stellar Astronomy (PHYS 1403) and Planetary Astronomy (PHYS 1404), both of which will be offered during evening hours.</p>

<p><span>Lone Star College-University Park will build on an existing continuing education program to offer a Machining Technology associate of applied science degree beginning this fall.</span></p>

<p>Humanities faculty member Amy Hirsch has taken over as the new director of The Honors College. She replaces Jason LaPres, who has accepted an interim dean position at LSC-CyFair.</p> <p>Hirsch teaches Honors Humanities I Prehistory to Gothic and has taught several other humanities and English courses during her teaching career at Lone Star College. She has worked for the college since 2007 in both student services and instructional roles.</p>

<p>First-time students planning to attend Lone Star College-University Park in the fall will have several opportunities for "one-stop shopping" to take care of admissions-related requirements during College Bound Days on Tuesday through Thursday, July 21-23.</p> <p>During the events, attendees can apply and enroll in classes, attend new student orientation and get help with financial aid. Students should bring their SAT/ACT scores as well as proof of bacterial meningitis vaccination.</p>

<p style="margin: 0px 0px 8px;">The Lone Star College Law Enforcement Academy will hold an open house at 9 a.m. on Monday, July 6, for anyone interested in the Basic Peace Officer training program.</p> <p><span>The event takes place at the academy, housed at Lone Star College-University Park in Building 12, Room 116. <p>Klein Forest High School seniors attended a signing ceremony recently to celebrate their commitment to attending Lone Star College-University Park.</p>

<p> Lured to a conference room under false pretenses, Lone Star College-University Park student Jessica Kent found herself surrounded by 30 well-wishers in on a secret: her next two years of college are paid for.</p> <p>Kent won one of 90 Undergraduate Transfer Scholarships from the Jack Kent Cooke Foundation. The award can be worth up to $40,000 a year for tuition, living expenses, books and fees.</p> <p>Kent plans to attend The University of Texas at Austin and major in International Relations and Global Studies.</p>

<p>Lone Star College System recently received a 2013 Pro Bono Award from the Lone Star Legal Aid (LSLA) during a reception celebrating National Pro Bono week.</p> <p>The organization specifically recognized LSC-University Park for its partnership, which includes hosting and promoting various LSLA events.  The reception was held last week at the LSLA offices in downtown Houston.</p>

<P>Winners of the Second Life for Books recycled art project were recently announced by the Student Learning Resource Center (SLRC) at Lone Star College-University Park. Utilizing their creativity, resourcefulness and problem-solving skills, students in the Drawing I class of art instructor Kari Breitigam created unique 3-D sculptures from recycled books.</P>
