LSC-University Park hosts a summer reading program to help young learners and empower aspiring educators

This Lions Reading Program provides an opportunity for students interested in teaching careers to support elementary students' reading skills and allow young readers to practice outside the classroom.

The Lions Reading Program, crafted by Jessica Mercado, LSC-University Park faculty member and former Klein ISD 3rd grade reading teacher, is uniquely designed to address the summer learning loss prevalent in elementary-aged children while bolstering the skills of students with teaching aspirations.

Open to children in grades K-5, the program offers an engaging and supportive learning environment where students can participate in interactive reading activities and acquire valuable reading strategies for the upcoming academic school year. Research underscores the positive impact of early exposure to literature in closing learning gaps and establishing a solid base for ongoing academic achievement.

Set to run every Tuesday and Wednesday from 9:00 am to noon, starting on July 18 and concluding on August 14. The Lions Reading Program will occur at the Energy & Manufacturing Institute (EMI) on the LSC-University Park campus, at 11521 Compaq Center West Dr, Houston, TX 77070.

LSC-University Park's Teachers 2B club, consisting of pre-service teachers, will play an instrumental role in the program. Under the supervision of certified teachers, these future educators will closely work with the students, facilitating an environment conducive to learning. This initiative also serves as a critical experiential learning platform for Teachers 2B, allowing them to apply their educational theories in a practical setting.

"Through the Lions Reading Program, we aim to provide an enriching and enjoyable experience for the children while equipping them with essential reading strategies for their academic journey," said Barbara Seals, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, and faculty adviser for the Teachers 2B club at LSC-University Park. "We are thrilled to launch this program, which brings together the passion and dedication of our pre-service teachers with the needs of our local community."

Free registration is now open for the Lions Reading Program, with a maximum capacity of 100 students. Parents or guardians interested in registering their children can do so at https://bit.ly/LRP_SignUp. Early registration is encouraged, as spots will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
