Lone Star College-University Park: A bridge between China and the United States

LSC-University Park President Shah Ardalan and two LSC-North Harris employees were selected to participate in the 2013 Chinese Bridge Delegation, a one-week educational exchange program in China Nov. 6-14. The program was sponsored by the Confucius Institute Headquarters (Hanban) in China.

Delegates were selected from institutions of higher education across the United States. The College Board led the delegation’s activities including visiting schools and universities; meeting with Chinese educators, administrators and students; participating in cultural activities; providing educational workshops; networking with Chinese and U.S. colleagues.

“This was an amazing opportunity to visit China first hand,” said Ardalan. “Our visit helped deepen our understanding of China, share innovative practices and build partnerships with Chinese schools and universities.”

In a gesture of reciprocity, a delegation from Qufu Normal University led by President Zhaoxun Jing visited LSC-University Park and LSC-North Harris in December. During this visit, the Chinese delegation met with faculty, administrators and students. Jing expressed his appreciation of innovative practices here that meet the educational needs of students.

“The concept of One Location… Many Opportunities and its educational partnerships is also unique and many in the world can learn from your ideas,” he said. Head of a 30,000 student campus, Jing shared with his American audience the importance of mentoring and faculty exchanges abroad that develop and strengthen teaching at Qufu Normal University.

Under the leadership of Chancellor Richard Carpenter and LSC-North Harris President Steve Head, Lone Star College System and Qufu Normal University signed a memorandum of understanding at the end of the visit.
