LSC-University Park Student Q&A: Enrique Paz

1. What are you studying at LSC-University Park?
I am currently studying to earn my Associate of Arts (AA) degree. My courses are mostly comprised of general classes along with some pre-requisites. The AA degree gives you the opportunity to take a wide range of classes that cater to you specifically. Plus, it looks good on a transcript/resume!

2. What does earning a degree mean to you?
Earning a degree means being able to go above and beyond in my education and learn skills to further advance my abilities. An education is a privilege that everyone should take advantage of. It allows you to take part in the world’s boundless opportunities.

3. What are some of the biggest advantages of attending a community college?
Lone Star College-University Park stands out from every other community college. Enrolling my freshman year, I was not sure what to expect. However, I was surprised with how much I’ve thrived. Being an LSC-University Park student has provided me with a vast array of aid, instruction, and even friendships!

Community college is extremely affordable compared to other institutions, and the class environment is phenomenal. Class sizes are usually no more than 30 students, and the professors make sure to give you the best lessons possible. Networking and collaborating with peers is another big advantage. Moreover, make sure to apply for the college’s scholarships! I earned my first one in less than a year.

4. What campus resources have helped you the most?
Advising has been the #1 resource for me thus far! The advising staff is always one e-mail away, so don’t be shy to reach out if you need it. In one short meeting you will be provided with the clarification you have been waiting for. Next thing you know you are almost at graduation.

5. Why is it important to get involved with student activities?
Student activities help propel your experience. I have joined the Student Ambassadors and the Phi Theta Kappa honor society. The student life aspect of college must be the most thrilling part of being enrolled. Now that the pandemic is starting to subside, more activities and clubs will be opening. Some of these cater specifically to younger students looking to get their minds off work.

6. Where is your favorite place to study on campus?
The Lion’s Den has to be the best place to study on campus. The laid-back atmosphere certainly does the trick! Furthermore, many students meet up there to chill and hang out in between classes.

7. What are your goals for after graduation?
I am going to transfer to a university where I plan to study public relations/marketing and obtain my bachelor’s degree. Fortunately, LSC-University Park is partnered with various institutions that make the transfer process seamless and practical.

8. What is your advice for incoming students at LSC-University Park?
Make sure to talk to an advisor as soon as you become a student! They will help you plan out the courses you need to take in accordance with your major, and also give you the appropriate guidance and instruction. In addition, do not be scared. Everyone here is incredibly friendly and committed to your success!
