Lone Star College beat out more than 200 global institutions for Innovation Award boosting U.S. Department of Education’s ‘MyData’ application

Campus Technology magazine announced June 1 that Lone Star College System received their 2013 Campus Technology Innovators award for the Student Systems and Services category.

Lone Star College-University Park competed with 235 submitted entries from higher education institutions around the globe.

LSC-University Park won this prestigious award for its innovative design and implementation of its patent-pending Education and Career Positioning System. The ECPS is a suite of applications that works with the U.S. Department of Education's ‘MyData’ button.

“The ECPS is the only one of its kind designed to be owned by the individuals regardless of where they start or end their education and career journey,” said Shah Ardalan, president of LSC-University Park. “This system is aimed to empower more than 80 million K-12 and college students in America and their parents to review what-if scenarios, discuss possibilities, and make informed decisions about critical education and career choices.

“LSC-University Park designed the ECPS to allow students, faculty, advisors, and parents the ability to simulate, navigate, validate and plan their education-to-career options and suggests the best individual journey. The ECPS does this by analyzing an individual’s interests, values, skills, and academic records and distributes personalized student analytics.

“Our Chief Strategist for Innovation, Mike Mathews, and his team have created a national and personal process that navigates students careers and educational options by leveraging the power of world-leading personalized mobile and analytical technologies,” said Ardalan.

“This innovation takes ‘Big Data’ and brings it down to a personal level to allow students and parents to partner with educational institutions and the workforce by taking an active role in viewing their own information.

“The hard work, dreams, ambitions, hopes and cooperation between students, parents, and both local and national leaders has created one of the greatest technological breakthroughs of our time,” said Ardalan.

At the same time that Campus Technology was finalizing its Innovators award, President Obama signed an Executive Orderdirecting his administration to take historic steps to make government-held data more accessible to the public and to entrepreneurs. This Executive Order coincides with all the work that LSC-University Park had been doing for the past two years directly with the U.S. Department of Education and the White House Office of Science and Technology on open data for students.

This is not the first award for the ECPS. The ECPS has also been recognized by the White House Office of Science and Technology, won the 2012 U.S. Department of Education Innovation Award for all U.S. students, and was recognized by IMS Global.

The ECPS is currently available for $49.95 annually. For more information on the Education and Career Positioning System visit http://www.eps4.me/. For more information on LSC-University Park, the college of the 21st century, visit LoneStar.edu/UP.

Lone Star College System opened its sixth college, LSC-University Park, by acquiring and transforming 71 acres of Compaq Computer’s former world headquarters into a campus with many opportunities. LSC-University Park provides access to affordable quality education and training.  Currently, the campus encompasses four university partners, a charter high school, a children’s academy, a law enforcement academy, a full-service conference center, Lone Star Corporate College, LSC Energy and Manufacturing Institute, and several commercial tenants.  A full range of credit, transfer, and continuing education classes, trainings, and certifications are offered online and face-to-face, day and night and on weekends.  President Shah Ardalan’s vision is to create the global model for the innovative college of the 21st century.  In just two years, Ardalan’s “Invitation-To-Innovate” (i2i) has resulted in many local, national and global recognitions.
