What is coaching?
Success Coaching is a strengths-based intervention process that provides ongoing interactions with students to engage them in gaining self-efficacy
and self-confidence in their academic success. Success Coaching equips students with academic tools and inspires students to capitalize on personal
and professional ability. In addition, students receive financial literacy coaching to support funding through their academic careers and beyond.
What is a success coach?
A success coach is a student’s long-term accountability partner, advocate, and mentor for their entire academic career at Lone Star College-Montgomery. Success Coaches focus on setting goals, establishing outcomes, and managing personal change. They facilitate student success through targeted coaching
and monitoring of individualized academic success plans while connecting students to additional resources. They work closely with other Maverick Outpost staff and departments at Lone Star College-Montgomery to expand the students support network.
Why should I contact a success coach?
When you connect with a success coach you will be able to connect with a coach throughout the academic year to help you with the following:
- Navigating transition and adjustment to being a college student
- Connections to campus resources and support services
- Motivation and organization in and out of the classroom
- Balancing home responsibilities with academic expectations
- Build financial knowledge about saving, credit score, budgeting and paying for college.

What happens at a coaching meeting?
Your Success Coach will engage you in conversation to help you discover your passions, goals, and campus opportunities.
Topic examples:
- Academic, personal, or financial goal setting
- Finding experiential learning opportunities like internships and exploring career outlook
- Developing time management techniques for a productive schedule
- Strengths assessment
- Career and major discovery
How many times do I meet with my Success Coach?
You will meet with your success coach at least three times during the semester. These meetings can range from 15-60 minutes depending on your needs. However, you can meet with your coach as needed.
- The initial Success Coach meeting to create an academic success plan with the student.
- The student will meet with the success coach mid-semester and adjust plan as needed.
- The Success Coach will contact the student to discuss their action plan for the next semester, progress, and receive feedback.
What is an individualized academic success plan?
The academic success plan is an individualized outline with specific milestones and goals designed to optimize the students experience at Lone Star College-Montgomery. Student milestones include faculty communication, reflection, creation of support networks, goal setting, and access to resources. Students will identify their goals and actively work with their coach to achieve them.
