One Campus, One Book (Maverick Common Reader)
The Common Reading Experience begins with the selection of The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks. Every first-year student receives a copy of the selected text at New Student Convocation to finish before the school year ends in December. Instructors from the Department of Writing and Rhetoric, First Year Experience, Department of Nursing, and others then utilize the text in their classes. The program aspires for an enriched sense of academic community through a communal reading of the text. Please use this site to locate information about events, the author, or how the book will be used in the college as well as in the community. If you have any questions or would like to get involved, please contact Angela.N.Colmenares@lonestar.edu.
The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor black tobacco farmer whose cells—taken without her knowledge in 1951—became one of the most important tools in medicine, vital for developing the polio vaccine, cloning, gene mapping, and more. Henrietta's cells have been bought and sold by the billions, yet she remains virtually unknown, and her family can't afford health insurance. This phenomenal New York Times bestseller tells a riveting story of the collision between ethics, race, and medicine; of scientific discovery and faith healing; and of a daughter consumed with questions about the mother she never knew.
