On the heels of a $1 million donation from an anonymous donor for Hurricane Harvey Relief, the Foundation distributed an additional $100,000 grant for relief assistance from Strada Education Network, Mayor Sylvester Turner, and the City's Office of Education, administered through the Greater Houston Community Foundation.
To be eligible, students had to be officially enrolled for Spring 2018 and reside within Houston city limits. A total of 350 full and part time students received aid, ranging from $100 to $500 each. Many students are still living in temporary housing and struggling with transportation as their vehicles flooded and they cannot afford the repairs.
"In reading through the thousands of applications, although students have suffered a great trauma, so many reiterated the importance of completing their education so they can better provide for their families and their future." Foundation Executive Director Nicole Robinson Gauthier said.
The Mayor thanked Lone Star College for our contributions thus far to the recovery efforts, helping students, faculty and staff after such a devastating disaster.
