Bringing Next-Generation Wi-Fi to Lone Star College

Faster, Stronger, More Responsive Connectivity for Students and Faculty

Lone Star College has launched a major Wi-Fi upgrade to enhance the digital experience for students, faculty, and staff. This multi-phase project is brining faster, more reliable wireless network access to every campus building, supporting modern learning and collaboration.

Why This Matters

Today’s students rely on technology for coursework, research, and collaboration. A strong, high-speed Wi-Fi network ensures seamless access to online resources, virtual classrooms, and digital tools that enhance learning. Faculty and staff will also benefit from improved connectivity, making it easier to conduct research, engage students, and streamline campus operations.

What’s Happening

The Wi-Fi upgrade is rolling out in multiple phases, starting with LSC-North Harris and continuing with LSC-Tomball, as part of our larger initiative to modernize Lone Star College campuses into digital-first environments.

Key benefits include:

  • Blazing-fast speeds – Up to 6x faster, so you can download, stream, and connect without delay.
  • Stronger reliability – Better performance in high-traffic areas, with fewer interruptions or slowdowns.
  • Ultra-responsive performance – Perfect for real-time tools like Zoom, Teams, and cloud-based teaching apps.

Curious about what sets Wi-Fi 7 apart? Here’s a quick read that highlights the benefits.

What You Need to Know

  • Upgrades will take place with minimal disruption to daily activities.

  • Wi-Fi access will remain available inside campus buildings but will not extend to outdoor areas.

  • Installation is currently underway! Once the new network launches, this next-generation Optimized Wi-Fi system will bring lasting improvements for students, faculty, and staff for years to come.

  • The Optimized Wi-Fi system will run alongside the current network until we’re ready for a smooth transition in early September. After installation and testing are complete, we’ll provide clear instructions on what to expect and how to connect to the new network.

Please note: Only devices that are Wi-Fi 7 capable — typically the newest models on the market — will be able to connect to the new network at launch. The current network will remain available and fully supported, so everyone can stay connected until they’re ready to switch.

This initiative reflects Lone Star College’s commitment to providing cutting-edge technology that supports student success and enhances the campus experience. Stay tuned for more updates as we bring optimized Wi-Fi to your campus!

Optimized Wi-Fi Launching October 12 at LSC–North Harris

Lone Star College–North Harris is entering its Digital Campus Era with the launch of our optimized “LoneStar” Wi-Fi network on October 12!

This major upgrade brings faster, stronger, and more reliable connectivity across campus — giving students, faculty, and staff a smoother, more powerful online experience.

Behind the scenes, our teams and partners have worked hard to bring this next-generation network to life:

  • 63,000 feet of Cat6a cable installed

  • 31 new patch panels added

  • 20 new network switches deployed

  • 418 new access points installed throughout campus

The result? Wi-Fi that’s up to 6x faster, more stable in high-traffic areas, and ready for the future of learning and collaboration at Lone Star College.

Go live: October 12
Network name: LoneStar

  • For your convenience, the Wi-Fi will continue to use the LoneStar network name just like our current, legacy network.
  • When connecting to the new 'LoneStar' for the first time after October 12, you may be prompted to log in. Use your Lone Star College email address and password as your credentials.
  • You’ll also need to accept a new security certificate.
  • Once connected, your device should remember your login and connect automatically in the future.
  • You’ll still connect to LoneStar at other campuses and back at North Harris without any issues.

Welcome to the Digital Campus Era — where technology works smarter, so our community can shine brighter.
