Guidance for Employees or Students in Health Care Setting |
The current guidance from the State Department of Health and Human Services for employees and students in a health care work place (including dental, chiropractic, occupational health, and other clinical services) is as follows:
1. Routine annual seasonal flu vaccination is recommended for all employees, volunteers, and students. (one vaccine)
2. Students, employees, and volunteers for whom pneumococcal (“pneumonia”) vaccine is recommended should receive this vaccination. (one vaccine)
3. A vaccine to protect against novel H1N1 influenza is anticipated to be available this Fall. An exact date is unknown at this time. Once available, the novel H1N1 flu vaccination (two vaccines given three weeks apart) is recommended for (and in this order):
- pregnant women,
- people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age,
- health care and emergency services personnel,
- persons between the ages of 6 months through 24 years of age, and
- people from ages 25 through 64 years who are at higher risk for novel H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems.
- When the vaccine needs of the groups above can be met, then vaccines are offered for persons 25 to 64 who are healthy, and
- When the vaccine needs of all groups mentioned above are met, then vaccines are offered to persons 65 and over, who seem to be at less risk for complications from novel H1N1 influenza, though at higher risk from seasonal influenza.
Please note that there is a possibility for an individual needing up to four vaccines this flu season.
LSCS recommends that all students, employees, and volunteers speak with their health care provider to determine whether you should be vaccinated for seasonal flu, pneumococcal, and/or 2009 H1N1 flu. The seasonal flu vaccine and other immunizations are available at $15 or without charge depending upon an individual’s availability topay at:
