Dual credit courses allow students to earn high school and college credit simultaneously. In music, as in other academic disciplines, this is limited to core courses.

No other music courses can be crosswalked, so while students can take them through the college for college credit, they cannot also earn high school credit.

Lone Star College-University Park offers six ensembles currently, and Klein ISD students can audition for them to earn college credit!

Large ensembles may be used toward an associate or bachelor's degree in music at most Texas public institutions. These large ensembles are currently offered at LSC-UP:

  • MUEN 1123.6201 Symphony Orchestra - currently open for Klein ISD students to audition (rehearses Monday evenings)
  • MUEN 1141.6001 Concert Choir
  • MUEN 1141.6201 Concert Choir: UP Chorale - currently open for Klein ISD students to audition (rehearses Tuesday evenings)
  • MUEN 1127.6201 Jazz Ensemble - can only be used as a large ensemble by students majoring in bass or guitar.

Small ensembles may be used for general elective or music elective credits in most associate and bachelor's degrees in Texas public institutions. These small ensembles are currently offered at LSC-UP:

  • MUEN 1127 Jazz Ensemble (can be used as a large ensemble by bassists or guitarists only)
  • MUEN 1134 Percussion Ensemble
  • MUEN 1151 Chamber Singers

Private lessons are available to all LSC-UP students if they are concurrently enrolled in a music class or ensemble through LSC-UP. with a successful audition. Klein ISD students are currently eligible to audition for private lessons in nearly all orchestral instruments, as well as in voice, piano, guitar, and composition at a cost of only around $9 per lesson.

  • Music major lessons are typically $206 for the entire semester and includes a weekly lesson and a weekly studio class for 12 weeks, followed by a jury.  That comes to under $9 per lesson!
  • Nonmajor lessons are typically $103 for the entire semester and include a weekly lesson, but no studio class, for 12 weeks, followed by a jury.

Majors' lessons may be used toward an associate or bachelor's degree in music at most Texas public institutions. Nonmajors' lessons may be used for general elective or music elective credits in most associate and bachelor's degree programs in Texas public institutions.

FAQ

We cannot guarantee that courses taken with LSC-UP will transfer to universities. Universities all set their own policies about transfer, but we have found that most public institutions in Texas will take LSC-UP music courses in the AA in Music degree plan toward the bachelor's degree at their institution. Other courses may be transferable for general or music elective credits. Ultimately, transferability is up to the institution to which you transfer.

You're typically looking at around $100-300 per class for the whole semester, but these can change over time, so please consult the Tuition & Fees page here. Tuition costs are based, in part, on the number of credit hours. To find the number of credit hours for a class, look at its second digit.  For instance:

  • DRAM 1120 is one credit hour (second digit is "1")
  • MUAP 1202 is two credit hours (second digit is "2")
  • ARTS 1301 is three credit hours (second digit is "3")
