What is TRIO Upward Bound?

History of TRIO & Upward Bound

Upward Bound (UB) emerged from the Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 in response to the growing racial disparity among graduates of higher education. With the addition of two other programs initiated by the Higher Education Act in the late 1960’s, the term “TRIO” was adopted to describe these three educational opportunity outreach programs initially.

Upward Bound is currently one of eight federal TRIO programs designed by the U.S. Department of Education to serve underrepresented high school students by supporting participants as they prepare for and navigate through college.

Upward Bound at Splendora High School

Upward Bound offers essential support to high school students in grades 9 through 12 as they prepare for life after graduation. The program aims to enhance participants' pre-college performance and facilitate their pursuit of higher education. Upward Bound specifically targets students from low-income families and those whose parents do not hold a bachelor's degree. The primary objective of Upward Bound is to increase the rate at which participants complete secondary education and subsequently enroll in and graduate from postsecondary institutions.

At Lone Star College-Kingwood, Upward Bound serves approximately 60 students from Splendora High School in Splendora ISD. We provide weekly tutoring, SAT/ACT preparation, and bi-weekly supplemental instruction in Mathematics, Science, and English. Additionally, participants have the opportunity to engage in college tours, cultural activities, and experiential learning trips throughout the year.
