Occupational Description

A sleep technologist works under the general supervision of the medical director or designee to provide comprehensive evaluation and treatment of sleep disorders including in center and out of center sleep testing, diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, comprehensive patient care and direct patient education. A sleep technologist is able to perform the duties defined for a sleep technician and is able to provide oversight of other sleep center staff. The sleep technologist is credentialed in sleep technology.

Program Details

As a polysomnographic technologist, you will conduct the sleep studies that allow physicians to diagnose and treat patients suffering from sleep disorders, evaluate patient sleep data, and educate patients on their sleep disorders and how best to manage them.

The Polysomnography program allows students to learn about sleep as a component of health, sleep disorders, and the knowledge, skills, and behaviors needed to become a sleep technologist. The curriculum includes courses in basic health profession skills, anatomy and physiology, sleep disorders, sleep medicine, polysomnographic technology and more. Students also learn about current events, skills, knowledge, and/or attitudes and behaviors pertinent to the field of technology or occupation and relevant to the professional development of the student.

Upon graduation from either award, the graduate is eligible to sit for the Board of Registered Polysomnographic Technologists exam to become a Registered Polysomnographic Technologist (RPSGT).
