The LSC-Kingwood Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program trains students to work with nurses in a variety of health care settings.
The health care industry is constantly growing and changing, which opens the door for a wide range of job opportunities.
Lone Star College-Kingwood has credit and continuing education health care programs that prepare future medical professionals. The Certified Nurse Aide (CNA) program, under continuing education, trains students to assist patients with their daily living activities such as bathing, grooming, and feeding. They also help nurses with medical procedures, check vital signs, and document patients’ statuses.
“CNAs represent an essential part of the patient-care team. In assisting the medical staff, they provide not only physical care for patients but also emotional and spiritual support, truly making a difference in the lives of patients and families,” said Jennifer Aubain, a continuing education coordinator at LSC-Kingwood.
The CNA program at LSC-Kingwood costs $1,434 and is seven-and-a-half weeks long. The next class begins March 28, and students will learn about patients’ rights, communication, safety, observation, reporting, and assisting residents in maintaining basic comfort and safety. They will gain plenty of hands-on experience during clinical activities. Upon successful completion, graduates can take the Texas State Department of Health and Human Services State Examination. They can also continue their education to become a licensed vocational nurse (LVN) or a registered nurse (RN) if they choose.
“Job prospects for CNAs are good due to the increasing long-term care needs of a growing society,” Aubain said.
CNAs must have a high school diploma or a GED to work in a hospital or enroll in a nursing program. They generally make $34,864 annually and are qualified to work in nursing homes, hospitals, mental health facilities, assisted living facilities, and home health.
