LSC-Kingwood respiratory care students earned third place in the Sputum Bowl, a state competition.
The Lone Star College-Kingwood Respiratory Care program recently attended the Texas Society for Respiratory Care (TSRC) State Convention over the summer.
The Lone Star Loogies 1 & 2 teams entered the Sputum Bowl, a trivia competition based on respiratory care topics. Each crew of five competed in a bracket-style contest against 12 groups across the state.
“This is the first time our team (Lone Star Loogies 1) not only made it to the final round but also placed third. We are extremely proud of their performance and sportsmanship,” said Dr. Fiona Campbell, respiratory care director at LSC-Kingwood.
The respiratory care program has attended the state convention and participated in the Sputum Bowl over the years to have fun and build camaraderie amongst students, faculty, and schools in the field. The winning team consisted of Kimberly Garcia, Marisela Garcia, and Karla McCord, under the leadership of Campbell and professors Richard Hernandez and Gary Wynne.
“Over the last few semesters, our students developed a great knowledge base. As faculty, we are happy that they relied on their confidence and used their skills to compete in this contest,” Campbell said.
The Respiratory Care program at LSC-Kingwood trains students in airway management, respiratory diseases, and ventilator management. It is a two-year program that leads to an associate of applied science (AAS) degree in respiratory care. With an AAS degree, most graduates seek entry-level work in a hospital. Other career opportunities include home care, diagnostic clinics, sleep technology, vendor sales, and education.
