LSC-Kingwood TRIO goes to the symphony

LSC-Kingwood TRIO goes to the symphony
LSC-Kingwood TRIO students recently attended a performance by Grammy-winning artist “Common” at the Houston Symphony.

Lone Star College-Kingwood offers academic programs and enrichment opportunities to produce well-rounded students who will transfer to a four-year university or enter the workforce.

The college's TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) transported 16 students to the Houston Symphony, which included a performance from Grammy-winning artist "Common." This opportunity bolstered students' passion for music, whether they are heavily involved in the music program at LSC-Kingwood or simply enjoy it.

"This was my first time going to a symphony, and being a future music major, I enjoyed every part of it. I was inspired to compose my music in various styles as displayed at the symphony," said Ne'Vaeh Young, a TRIO and LSC-Kingwood student. "This opportunity solidified my plans to make a career in music, and I gained valuable contacts that I can rely on academically and professionally."

TRIO SSS offers academic support and programming to students classified as first-generation in college, income-limited, or have a documented disability over the next five years. It encourages students to succeed in their college careers by increasing retention, graduation, and transfer rates to a four-year college or university.

"We promote cultural and social engagement by providing opportunities for our students to participate in activities and events that broaden their cultural awareness," said Danielle Ward, TRIO program manager at LSC-Kingwood. "Taking our students to the symphony fosters music appreciation, cultivates cognitive and social development, and exposes them to the wonderful world of performing arts."

In addition to cultural experiences, TRIO offers other activities, including college and university road trips, career exploration and survey, and leadership roundtable discussions.
