LSC-Kingwood will host the sixth African American and Hispanic Institute for Males on June 14-17.
HOUSTON (May 13, 2022) – Lone Star College strives to increase the number of male minority students.
To accomplish that goal and prepare more young men at an earlier age for success after high school, LSC-Kingwood will host the sixth African American and Hispanic Institute for Males on June 14-17 from 8:30 a.m.-3:45 p.m. The conference is open to area males aged 14-18 years old. The deadline to apply is Friday, May 27.
“The vision for this institute is to ensure that the college’s commitment to student success reaches the African American and Hispanic male populations,” said Al Dorsey, student life director at LSC-Kingwood. “This underserved population does not make college a first choice after high school.”
The African American and Hispanic Institute for Males is a four-day intense program that will cover various topics such as leadership, cultural heritage, life skills, interview etiquette, and college preparedness. Participants will develop skills that will lead them to brighter futures. They will also have an opportunity to interact with positive male role models and connect with leaders who can serve as mentors.
“Our main goal is to offer a life-changing summer opportunity to young men so that more will take advantage of the educational opportunities available at the community college,” Dorsey said.
The LSC-Kingwood African American and Hispanic Institute for Males is free, and participants will receive lunch each day. For more information or to register for the conference, visit www.lonestar.edu/aaim-him.htm or email Alfred.Dorsey@lonestar.edu.
