HOUSTON (April 1, 2022) – Lone Star College-Kingwood offers multiple educational opportunities, in and out of the classroom, to enrich lives.
These offerings prepare students for the workforce and train them with valuable life skills. For instance, the college’s Alpha Lambda Xi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) provides opportunities to develop leadership and service.
“We want students to participate in an intellectual climate to exchange ideas and ideals for lively fellowship for scholars and stimulate interest in continuing academic excellence,” said Dr. Matthew Newton, a government professor and PTK faculty advisor.
The LSC-Kingwood PTK has consistently earned various regional or international chapter awards each year since 1997. The winning trend continued when the group received several honors at the Texas Regional Convention a few weeks ago.
“We won chapter and individual awards based on the high scores that the student entries received in multiple categories,” he said. “I can confidently say that their exceptional hard work was rewarded.”
PTK received three chapter awards: Texas Top for being one of the best chapters across the Texas Region; Five Star, the highest distinction that acknowledges its group activity across the year; and the College Project Award of Merit, which recognizes the chapter’s presentation to iSchool students at LSC-Atascocita Center.
“We know these would not have been possible without the incredible level of support for our chapter by the LSC-Kingwood administration. On behalf of our officers and members, I want to extend our sincerest gratitude for allowing our students to have these opportunities,” Newton said.
The PTK Regional Convention also awarded four individual awards. Alexandra Blue, student and vice president of leadership and scholarship, earned the Hall of Honor for Chapter Officers; David Baty, vice president of instruction, received the Hall of Honor for College Administrators; and Dr. Jared Miller, interim dean of instruction of social sciences, humanities, cosmetology, and kinesiology, and Dr. Matthew Newton, each earned the Horizon Award.
“I could not attend the convention, so when I received a flood of texts congratulating me for receiving the Hall of Honor, I was completely shocked,” Blue said. “I think all of our awards positively influence both Alpha Lambda Xi and the LSC-Kingwood community. We receive so much support for our projects that we are now honored to share our success with the staff and students who helped us.” Blue will graduate from LSC-Kingwood in May with an Associate of Arts degree and transfer to a four-year university for computer science. Her career goal is to advance software for 3-D environments and animation.
