With various medical challenges that many people face today, there is a growing need for trained, qualified, and compassionate health care workers.
Lone Star College-Kingwood recently opened its Health Professions Center (HPC) on campus to answer this demand. The new facility houses all five health care programs: dental assisting, dental hygiene, nursing, occupational therapy assistant, and respiratory care.
“The HPC has state-of-the-art instructional spaces, which will allow many of our health care programs to grow,” said David Baty, vice president of instruction at LSC-Kingwood. “This center now allows us to offer more biology, chemistry, and anatomy/physiology classes in our Science Instructional Building.”
The HPC also has simulation, virtual, and cardiopulmonary labs to help students learn and gain necessary experience treating various conditions and situations. Other highlights include a 24-chair dental clinic; two skills labs complete with 11 hospital beds; a simulation lab with eight surgical areas, three ICU rooms, a labor and delivery area; a life-skills teaching lab; a patient environment lab, and a rehab gym.
“Our main goal is to prepare students to work in various health care settings. Those sites include hospitals, dental clinics, nursing and rehabilitation facilities, and other medical clinics,” said Dr. Ryan Chabarria, interim dean of health occupations and biological sciences.
LSC-Kingwood held a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 22. The college is located at 20000 Kingwood Drive. For additional information on the new facility or the health care programs, visit www.LoneStar.edu/Health-Science-Kingwood.
