LSC-Kingwood and HAAM will host a Community Food Fair on Feb. 16 and April 13 in Parking Lot G at the college.
Hunger and food insecurity are growing problems across the country. In Texas, 4 million people (nearly 800,000 in Harris and Montgomery counties) struggle to eat regular meals to sustain a healthy life.
“Several factors contribute to food insecurity, including low wages, unemployment, chronic illnesses, high medical costs, or lack of affordable housing,” said Dr. Sandra Zito, a history professor at Lone Star College-Kingwood and food fair co-organizer.
To help address those needs, LSC, in collaboration with the Humble Area Assistance Ministries (HAAM), has assisted many families in the Lake Houston area and East Montgomery County at its Community Food Fair. The partnership will host two events on Feb. 16 and April 13 from 9-11 a.m. (until supplies last) in Parking Lot G at the college. Boxes of fresh vegetables, fruits, meat, and an assortment of baked goods such as bread and pastries will be available.
“Since the pandemic has caused millions of workers to lose their jobs, food insecurity has increased. Today, even more Americans are struggling between keeping a roof over their head or consistent meals on the table,” Zito said. “This is why our Community Food Fair is so important today.”
This joint effort is essential during the COVID-19 crisis. According to a recent report, Feeding America estimates that at least 38 million Americans and 12 million children are food insecure due to the pandemic.
The Community Food Fair began in September 2015. Since then, around 900 volunteers have helped more than 3,000 households and close to 14,000 individuals in the Lake Houston community, East Montgomery County, and surrounding areas.
