Lone Star College-Kingwood understands that student success starts with support and preparation during the K-12 years.
To this end, the college applied for and received the Upward Bound Grant from the Department of Education. The grant amount will be $1,420,813 over the next five years. The college will use the funds starting in fall 2023 to serve Splendora High School students classified as either first-generation college students or are from low-income families.
“We want to assist Splendora families in eliminating obstacles to academic success through support and resources,” said Dr. Melissa Gonzalez, LSC-Kingwood president. “This funding will give students the necessary skills and motivation to graduate high school and enroll and complete a college program.”
The Upward Bound Grant, part of the Federal TRIO Program, will fund various activities at LSC-Kingwood and Splendora High School, such as academic instruction, tutoring, course selection, cultural enrichment, and summer bridge. The goal is to increase the students’ chance to complete secondary education and enroll in and graduate from postsecondary education institutions.
“We are excited that this opportunity will provide our students with academic advising, standardized test preparation, scholarship and financial assistance, career exploration, college tours, and much more,” said Dr. Jeff Burke, Splendora ISD superintendent.
The Upward Bound Grant will have built-in performance measures such as:
- Secondary school GPA.
- STAAR test results in reading/language arts and math.
- High school graduation.
- Rigorous programs of study.
- Postsecondary enrollment.
- Completion of an associate or bachelor’s degree six years after high school graduation.
