TRIO Advisor Jazmin Sanchez, left, assists Tawanna Shaw, an LSC-Kingwood student, with support services.
HOUSTON (May 19, 2022) – Lone Star College’s mission of student success is partially possible by its employees’ professional achievements.
Jazmin Sanchez, a TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) advisor at LSC-Kingwood, is one of two leaders selected to serve on the Council for Opportunity in Education (COE) Keith Sherin Global Leaders Program in The Hague, Netherlands. She will co-lead a group of 15 students during the three-week global trip.
“I am extremely excited to receive this incredible opportunity to serve as a guide for our students, here and abroad,” Sanchez said. “I want to help them seize opportunities and expand their cultural awareness.”
The group will travel to The Netherlands on June 25 and spend two days in Amsterdam. Students will enroll in the Hague Summer School for two weeks, where they will learn about sustainability, technology, global migration, and other topics. They will return to the U.S. on July 16.
“I am excited to learn about diversity from a Dutch perspective. My goal is to bring this information back home and apply it to our efforts in diversity and inclusion,” she said.
While this is an excellent chance for students, it will also positively impact Sanchez. Applying for the role was met with personal doubt; however, she persevered to encourage others not to let the “monster of mediocrity” dictate their futures. Additionally, she knew that her international experience - as a student in Morocco and visiting relatives in England, Ireland, and Mexico – would be an asset to COE and her travel group.
“Jazmin was the top female candidate in the nation chosen for this amazing opportunity. They could not have selected a better group leader as she will significantly impact the students’ lives,” said Danielle Ward, TRIO SSS manager and project director.
Sanchez has been an LSC-Kingwood TRIO SSS advisor since 2021, served as a bilingual elementary teacher, and held other jobs in the education and customer service industries. She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Global Studies from the University of California at Santa Barbara, an Alternative Teacher Certificate from LSC-Kingwood, and a master’s degree in Public Administration from Stephen F. Austin State University.
