Tax season can increase stress and confusion for even the most conscientious taxpayers.
The AARP Foundation Tax-Aide will offer anyone free tax assistance through a partnership with Lone Star College-Kingwood. However, their focus is on taxpayers aged 50 and older who have low to moderate incomes.
AARP Tax-Aide has worked with the college since 2008 to provide free tax help. All volunteers are trained and IRS-certified each year, and they understand the latest changes and additions to the tax code.
Volunteers will work with clients from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Fridays beginning Feb. 18 through April 8, except March 18. Tax Assistance, available by appointment only, will occur in the Administration and Performing Arts Center room 119 at LSC-Kingwood. If individuals arrive without an appointment, they will receive a time and a tax envelope listing the necessary forms that they need to complete.
“The college offers this service each year as a community outreach effort. Our goal is to assist anyone, especially seniors, with their taxes. Volunteers can help with forms, answer questions, and walk applicants step-by-step through the whole process,” said Pat Chandler, continuing education director at LSC-Kingwood. “This service is free, which provides appointees with a cost-effective and reliable way to handle their taxes.”
AARP Tax-Aide uses the TaxSlayer software to prepare forms and electronically file on behalf of applicants. Appointments may take one to three hours, depending on the number of clients and the complexity of each return. The group asks that each person be on time and have all documents needed to complete their return.
