Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner Tom Ramsey’s Office will hold a safety training event at the Lone Star College-Atascocita Center.
Chief Kevin Hubbard, Harris County Constable Pct. 5, will present “Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) on Monday, Aug. 22, from 6-8 p.m. The interactive PowerPoint presentation will discuss recent attacks and provide the audience with the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) motto of “AVOID, DENY, DEFEND” to help them survive a violent attack.
“As kids, we were taught to ‘stop, drop and roll’ if we caught on fire. This rapid response training will keep you and others safe during a mass shooting incident,” Hubbard said.
This presentation has similar concepts and principles to Homeland Security’s “Run, Hide, Fight” protocol. ALERRT continually updates CRASE based on research conducted at attack sites. Community members will learn more about ALERRT, how individuals typically respond under high-stress events, and helpful tips that everyone can use in a crisis.
“We are excited to provide the location for this vital topic,” said Dr. Melissa Gonzalez, president of LSC-Kingwood and LSC-Atascocita Center. “With the new school year fast approaching, we know that campus security is a hot topic. We believe parents and the community will want effective methods to keep them and their children safe.”
Attendees will receive refreshments, county and college updates, and an opportunity to meet their neighbors. They will also receive a certificate at the end of the program.
“The more people who learn these potential life-saving techniques and behavior, the better,” said Tom Ramsey, Harris County Precinct 3 Commissioner. “A vigilant community is a safe community; together, we can make a real difference in telling bad people to go elsewhere.”
