The Kingwood Chorale will perform a patriotic concert on May 7 at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood.
Lone Star College-Kingwood hosts and participates in various activities supporting the military.
The Kingwood Chorale and musical guests will honor veterans and the country by performing at the National Memorial Day Choral Festival in Washington, D.C., on May 28-29. Under the leadership of conductor Dr. Todd Miller, the group will sing at the Kennedy Center alongside the Air Force Orchestra and the WWII Memorial. They will also perform at the opening of the nationally televised Memorial Day Parade.
“The chorale is known for presenting classical choral and orchestral masterworks for the greater Lake Houston community. However, there are times when a departure is warranted, especially when honoring veterans and our beloved country,” Miller said.
To prepare for the Memorial Day event, the Kingwood Chorale, LSC-Kingwood Concert Choir, and the First Presbyterian Church’s Chancel Choir members will present patriotic and other American music on May 7 at 7:30 p.m. The concert will occur at the First Presbyterian Church of Kingwood and will highlight several local veterans, representing all veterans, for their sacrifice in defending the public’s freedom. Soprano Nancy Curtis will return to perform several patriotic pieces, and the performers will inspire the audience with their renditions of “God Bless America,” “My Country, Tis of Thee,” “America the Beautiful,” and more.
“During rehearsal, the music jarred memories of several choir members who are veterans,” Miller said. “Their personal testimonies are powerful reminders that the freedom we enjoy today came as a hefty price, and this concert is a time to remember and give thanks for those sacrifices.”
The singers will recognize all veterans in attendance by asking them to stand during a unique piece entitled, ‘Salute to the Armed Forces. Additionally, they will premiere a new arrangement of ‘Mansions of the Lord,’ by composer John Crabtree, in remembrance of those who gave the ultimate sacrifice in war.
The Lake Houston Musical Arts Society (LHMAS) underwrites the Kingwood Chorale. LHMAS is a 501(c)(3) organization serving the Kingwood area since 1987.
