Evok will celebrate 10 years with a concert on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. at Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
HOUSTON (March 31, 2022) – The Lone Star College-Kingwood Music Department has partnered with local performers to offer exciting entertainment for all to enjoy.
Eclectic Voices of Kingwood (Evok), composed of students and community members with music degrees who want the challenge of performing a wide array of pieces, is celebrating 10 years with new work and choral favorites. The 2021-2022 ensemble will present a new 12-minute work, “Dark Night of the Soul,” by contemporary composer Ola Gjeilo on April 8 at 7:30 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church.
“The rest of the concert will be favorites, which includes classical, contemporary, and virtuoso pop music arrangements for a choir,” said Dr. Todd Miller, department chair of Visual and Performing Arts at LSC-Kingwood and Evok conductor.
Dr. Miller started Evok in 2012 to delve into the vast collection of choral chamber music produced recently. The group performs classical and popular music juxtaposed against each other. The goal is to introduce and challenge students with the music of the past and present.
“By design, this ensemble was to be eclectic-in both repertoire and in the makeup of the singers. We have first-year college students singing next to professionals who have been singing choral music for 40 years. That is exciting,” Miller said. “The concerts are designed to be fun, moving, and to get one thinking about a wide variety of subjects and emotions humans go through in life.”
The “Dark Night of the Soul” concert is free and open to all community members. For more information on this performance or Evok, email Todd.R.Miller@LoneStar.edu.
