Come discover the world through poetry, a Reader’s Theatre performance and project presentations open to the community during International Education Week at Lone Star College-CyFair this November.
“International Education Week is a wonderful opportunity to highlight and celebrate just some of the things that LSC-CyFair does in support of our international student population, internationalizing our curriculum, and giving students opportunities to engage in study abroad, virtual exchange, and cross-cultural relationship building,” said Laura Taggett, International Faculty Fellow and faculty member.
While some events are earmarked for students and faculty only throughout the week, community members are welcome to attend several events Nov. 13 through Nov. 15.
Join Government Professor William Schulz for a movie and discussion on the Cuban Missile Crisis from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Monday in the Center for Academic and Student Affairs (CASA) Room 110. Come back Wednesday from 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. in the same room for Schulz’s presentation on mid-19th century social and political developments in Germany, Italy and France as part of his lecture series on the Communist Manifesto.
A Comparative Poetry workshop exploring two iconic poets, John Keats and Majaz (known as the Keats of Urdu), will be held with Tazeen Zahida, an accomplished playwright and Houston-based artist and educator, from noon – 1:30 p.m. Tuesday in the library (LRNC) Room 215. LSC-CyFair Librarian Regina Vitolo will join Zahida (whose stories reflect the human experience and the lives of Pakistani immigrants) to help attendees understand the social context for each work and delve into the poetry itself with fascinating discussion and analysis.
Wednesday’s schedule of events begin and end with two opportunities to discover “Who We Are” as neighbors, classmates and a global community as LSC-CyFair international students in ESOL classes present aspects of their native cultures and passions from 11 a.m. – noon and again from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. in the library (LRNC) on the first floor.
Wednesday’s schedule also provides an opportunity to learn about Greek myths that still have global significance today as the LSC-CyFair Reader's Theatre performs Mary Zimmerman's “Metamorphoses” based on the work of ancient Roman author Ovid from 3 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. in CASA Room 110.
