Graduating college with honors at the age of 17 is not something that an average teenager accomplishes every day, but for Bonnie Hamby, her journey to success was clearly paved.
Bonnie's journey with Lone Star College-Montgomery began when she enrolled in the Montgomery Dual-Credit homeschool program at just 13 years old. Eager to learn and participate in everything that the college had to offer, Bonnie immersed herself in the student experience with a plethora of opportunities that awaited her. She attended a series of seminars on effective study habits to one-on-one tutoring at the Write Place, to expand her knowledge and develop a deeper appreciation for the journey of continual growth and learning.
Lone Star College-Montgomery also provided her with numerous extracurricular activities that made learning fun and engaging. Bonnie particularly enjoyed participating in the various cultural festivities hosted on campus, which created an engaging and joyful learning environment for her. When COVID-19 forced the college to switch to online learning, the college provided support through virtual tutoring programs, enabling Bonnie to continue her education uninterrupted. Despite the challenges, Bonnie continued to lead various clubs and organizations, including founding the Math Society and serving as treasurer of the Engineering Society.
Bonnie took the leadership initiative to work with her Calculus Professor to start up a Math Society on campus. She attended club day to promote the club and invited students to attend. The first meeting had a packed room of students who were eager to get back together and enjoy academic pursuits. This new club was officially off to a successful start.
Bonnie was also the Treasurer of the Engineering Society for a year and a half. Since she was studying accounting, she jumped right into that leadership role. She worked with the coding and engineering students to order the parts needed to make a Raspberry pi remote-controlled car, and a robotic arm. The students seemed dedicated to spending time together working on projects that received no grade and no course credit. The teamwork and camaraderie were evident.
All of these opportunities at Lone Star College-Montgomery provided Bonnie with a very rich academic experience as a dual-credit student. While most teens were still figuring out their future plans, Bonnie was busy making history at Lone Star College-Montgomery. Her dedication and hard work, coupled with the unwavering support from the school's faculty, turned her academic dreams into a reality.
Bonnie Hamby's success story is a remarkable showcase of the impact of a dual-credit education offered by Lone Star College-Montgomery. Having earned her Associate of Science degree magna cum laude at the age of 17 while also completing her high school coursework, Bonnie's journey is a testament to the nurturing community and faculty at Lone Star College-Montgomery. The college's commitment to providing a diverse range of extracurricular activities and academic excellence is evident through Bonnie's achievements and highlights the endless opportunities available to all students.
