Lone Star College-Montgomery is proud to announce the achievement of student John Vrablec, who has recently earned his certification as a Certified Survey Technician (CST) III. His journey from discovering the Lone Star College-Montgomery Land Surveying and Mapping program to achieving the Level III certification stands evident in the program's immense value for aspiring professionals.
Originally from a small town just outside Houston, Texas, John’s story begins when he returned from deployment in Iraq in 2008. An opportunity arose at Humphrey Company as a construction surveyor. Over the past decade, he has dedicated himself to honing his skills and climbing the ladder within the company as well as furthering his education, creating a valued career instead of a job.
At Humphrey Company, John collects data through the use of robotic total stations for precise measurements, revolutionizing traditional surveying methods. Today, these same techniques are becoming a standard practice on construction sites. In addition to his contributions at Humphrey Company, John is furthering his education through enrollment in the Lone Star College-Montgomery Land Survey and Mapping program. John credits his professors, Adam Salazar and Arthur Bernal for their guidance to expand his expertise and shape the future of land surveying.
Before joining the surveying program, Vrablec had no certifications in the field. However, in his first semester, he earned both CST I and CST II certifications from the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS). He continued his studies in the second semester, and soon after, he earned a Land Surveying Certification. Reflecting on his CST III certification, John recalls first hearing about it during his academic pursuits. He recognized it as an essential milestone in his career path, serving as both a powerful recruitment tool and a clear guide to necessary proficiency.
John's dedication to the program has ignited a wave of motivation within his team, who now aspire to attain their CST certifications while seeking guidance on preparation for the test. Having achieved CST III in construction, John now aims for the level 4 certification.
"I am grateful for the surveying program, which has not only provided me with an excellent education but also allowed me to gain these certifications," said Vrablec.
Looking back at his success story, John acknowledges the importance of asking questions, using all resources, and most importantly, taking pride in his work. As the profession evolves due to technology, John sees a bright future for land surveying. He wants to be a part of that evolution while continually excelling in his field of expertise. Vrablec is set to complete his AAS in May 2024 and plans to continue pursuing his passion in the field of surveying.
John Vrablec’s story is just one example of how hard work, dedication, and an unexpected path can help move someone forward in their career and further the success of the land surveying industry. For those seeking to make a mark in their chosen field, John's advice is simple: "Make it not only a job but a career."
