Featuring a theme of “All Together Now”, Lone Star College-CyFair Library’s Summer Reading Program was a huge success with 2,019 registered readers, the highest number among all the Harris County Public Library (HCPL) branches, and 174 programs with a combined attendance of 10,634 people.
“The number of participants in all aspects of our Summer Reading Program is a direct result of the hard work and creativity put forth by our amazing library team and the support we receive from our Friends of the Library group,” said Melanie Wachsmann, Library Director.
Missy Dixon, Assistant Director of Children’s Services, said 1,494 of LSC-CyFair’s registered readers were ages 12 and under; more than 1,000 free books were given away to patrons and all they had to do was read; and the LSC-CyFair branch ranked third in growth for social media from HCPL.
The Friends of the Library at LSC-CyFair funded several summer programs such as Big Time Bubbles (kickoff event), Astros Orbit Reading Show, John O’Bryant Magic Show and Crocodile Encounter, which all drew more than 400 attendees, as well as the Houston Museum of Natural Science Bug Mobile, which attracted 270 attendees.
Raising awareness about cats and dogs throughout June and July, community members, faculty, staff and students enjoyed cat-themed and dog-themed story times and crafts, puzzles, games, cat yoga, an agility dog program, workshops, discussions, L.I.F.E. programs and more. Partnering with Purr Paws Rescue, #TeamFeral Houston Cat Rescue, Texas Great Pyrenees Rescue and Special Pals Rescue, the library team’s Cool Cat Café drew 234 participants while the Pupper Person Pawty drew 189 attendees resulting in three cats and two dogs finding their “furrever” homes.
“The work and dedication by every member of the library staff transforms the space into a magical place that fosters a love for learning and fun for all members of our community and LSC-CyFair staff and students,” Wachsmann said.
The LSC-CyFair Library offers something year round for children, teens and adults such as a variety of monthly book clubs, computer workshops, story times, events, volunteer opportunities and more. Go to LoneStar.edu/library/cyfair for information.
