Not only is it never too late to start college, return to college, or just enjoy learning at college, but now is the time and Lone Star College-CyFair is the place. Find out why at the June 27 Zoom information session and from non-traditional alumni and students.
After two previous attempts to finish college in the two decades since graduating high school, Charley Fisher found the third time was the charm, when LSC-CyFair accepted the majority of her 70 credits she had previously earned.
“I was a bit intimidated attending LSC-CyFair as a non-traditional student, old enough to be the mother of most students in my classes. After the first week, all those fears were tossed to the side,” Fisher said. “The professors were so passionate about teaching in a way I hadn’t experienced at other universities. I felt very welcomed and accepted by everyone and quickly made friends I still keep up with today.”
Graduating Magna Cum Laude in 2019, Fisher is now a Communications Specialist for a global environmental engineering firm focused on disaster recovery who says for the first time in her life, she has a career, not a job.
After putting college on hold to raise three children and working 10 years with Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District, Yvette Rodriguez felt it was time to focus on her education in pursuit of a career doing what she loved – reading, writing and storytelling.
She decided LSC-CyFair was a financial and logistical option that enabled her to maintain her full-time job just down the street from her children, which she said gave her peace of mind.
“Had I not had the convenience of LSC-CyFair and the flexibility of taking evening classes, I probably would not be where I am today,” she said. “During my time at Lone Star, I had fantastic, driven peers and met many wonderful and caring professors, who were genuinely invested in my success.”
Graduating Cum Laude with an associate degree in 2022, Rodriguez works in business development remotely for Gilbert Garcia Group, P.A, a Florida law firm.
After the loss of her mother, Marian Liebling said she wanted to do something positive and decided to return to college and even convinced her husband, Scott, to take courses, too.
For more than a decade now, the Lieblings have been at LSC-CyFair taking history classes, philosophy, calculus, geography and many more - what Scott called “a hodge podge of courses, stuff that sounds interesting.”
“As older students, we have a different rapport with the professors. They’re fantastic and I can’t really quantify how much I’ve learned. And we’ve gotten to know wonderful students,” Marian said. “LSC-CyFair is our happy place. We feel like everyone here at this campus is family. It’s a welcoming place and a safe, wonderful environment for all students to learn.”
For non-traditional students to learn about all of LSC-CyFair’s programs of study, what classes are like, admission steps, financial aid and more, a Zoom information session is set 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. June 27.
