TOMBALL, TX: The first LSC-Creekside Center Wolfpack Academy (CWA) learning cohort will launch Fall 2023. In the new program, a group of students will start their education journey together and advance together through their courses on a set schedule, at a predetermined pace. Together, upon completion, students will earn their Associates of Arts (AA) or Associate of Science (AS) degree.
“I like that the Wolfpack Academy program schedule is set in stone,” said Noah Hobbs, a Tomball High School Senior who was the first student to enroll in the new program. “With owing as much money as I do on my car, knowing I will only have classes about twice a week, leaving me time to work, is really amazing.”
The two-year CWA cohort program will follow a structured, eight-week hybrid schedule, allowing students to plan their busy lives, while keeping college at the forefront of the planning process. The cohort learning style will promote creativity, leadership opportunities, and foster a sense of community.
“Cohort learning can be very beneficial,” said Tomball High School college and career counselor Emily Nichols. “Students like that they are able to work alongside a group of peers, who are going through the same things as they are, such as learning time management, learning how to take notes and study effectively, learning new and challenging coursework, and how to navigate the world of college.”
Each CWA student will be assigned a cohort mentor who will provide them intentional support throughout the program. CWA courses will use Open Educational Resources (OERs) with no required textbooks.
“College for many high school students can be seen as an obstacle rather than a steppingstone to a bright future,” said Nichols. “For those students, the CWA program has the support they need. Students will save money, have opportunities to network, and have accountability for following through to graduate.”
After a successful first year in the CWA program, students may qualify for a scholarship for the remaining duration of the program. After completing their AA or AS degree, students may qualify for a transfer scholarship to a Texas university.
Once Hobbs completes his AS with the CWA, he plans to transfer to a four-year university to earn his bachelor’s degree, and then pursue a masters in biochemistry. Inspired by the TV series Biohackers, Hobbs’s ultimate career goal is to conduct biohacking research, which he says, “could ultimately eliminate disease.”
Hobbs and a cohort of his peers will begin their college journey together this coming fall. “I’m most excited about getting started,” said Hobbs. “I’m looking forward to the bonding and the friendships I'll make in the CWA program. I’m also just excited to see where this education will take me in life.”
