Inspiring Scholarship Recipient Breakfast Draws Hundreds to LSC-Kingwood Campus

KINGWOOD (April 24, 2023) – More than 250 people packed the Student Conference Center last Thursday to honor Donors who have changed the lives of LSC-Kingwood students. The 11th Annual Scholarship Recipient Breakfast allowed many of them to meet the students who have benefited from their scholarships or endowments.

LSC-Kingwood President Dr. Melissa Gonzalez thanked the Donors and the Lone Star College Foundation for their incredible generosity in supporting students year after year.

Several students shared how their scholarships helped them overcome obstacles to be successful. Samantha Galvan won the Rotary Club of East Montgomery County Endowment Scholarship. Her parents came from Mexico to give her a chance at a better education. She said the scholarship “will help me tremendously to continue focusing on my education and to achieve my dream goal of becoming a teacher.”

Another student shared how his endowment helped him discover his passion and follow his dreams. Carlos Diaz earned The Cooper Reid Wilson Memorial Endowment. He said, “I had small hopes that I would ever attend college after high school, especially since I was a first-generation student as well…Because of this scholarship, I was able to discover and study what I am passionate about now, electrical engineering.”

Lea Kelly, who won the Chancellor’s Scholarship and the Insperity Endowment, also spoke about her unique journey. She left a successful career to go back to school to become a nurse. She almost gave up – but the words of one professor made all the difference. She said, “his point was that we are all in school to enrich ourselves, and I should not be ashamed, but proud that I took action to pursue my academic goals.”

LSC-Kingwood would like to congratulate all students who received scholarships or endowments this year and once again thank the organizations and Donors who helped ease their financial burdens, and in turn, give them greater opportunities to succeed.
