Hendrina Bawa, Lone Star College-Montgomery Phi Theta Kappa student, was named a 2023 Coca-Cola Academic Team Bronze Scholar based on her academic achievements, leadership and engagement in college and community service.
“My involvement with PTK has fostered great relationships, given me the space to grow and challenged my limits and capabilities,” said Bawa. “Those experiences have helped me toward becoming a Coca-Cola bronze scholar, a prestigious honor that sets the tone for me to work even harder and be impactful wherever I find myself.”
The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation sponsors the Coca-Cola Academic Team program by recognizing 50 gold, 50 silver and 50 bronze scholars with nearly $200,000 in scholarships annually. Bawa and other scholars will receive a scholarship, a commemorative medallion and international recognition at the Phi Theta Kappa Catalyst Conference in Ohio April 20-22.
“The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation has a long history of providing financial assistance to outstanding students at community colleges,” said Jane Hale Hopkins, Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation President. “We are proud to partner with Phi Theta Kappa to make it possible for more deserving students to achieve their educational goals and support tomorrow’s leaders of the global community.”
Bawa is studying nursing at LSC-Montgomery and plans to work as a bedside nurse and explore other positions in the health care field. She also wants to be an entrepreneur, hoping to create job opportunities that will support families.
“PTK students can make friends with like-minded individuals with different backgrounds and gain experience working together on projects that benefit their colleges,” said Dr. Rebecca L. Riley, LSC-Montgomery President.
Phi Theta Kappa at Lone Star College recognizes students’ academic achievement and encourages individual growth and participation through leadership, service and fellowship opportunities. They work with faculty mentors who help them broaden and deepen their knowledge, learn research techniques and find ways to serve their communities.
