"It's been wonderful having student artwork in our halls again," said Kari Breitigam, LSC-University Park Professor of Art. "Because it is a competitive exhibit, there's always a lot of excitement surrounding the juried art show. This show is essential not only to celebrate the skills and creativity of our students but also to provide them with the experience of the juried exhibition, preparing artwork to be gallery-ready, experiencing a competitive jurying process, and hearing from an art professional from our city."
LSC-University Park student, Emma Reyna, was one of the featured artists, with four works selected for the show.
"Having four of my artworks on display is a huge milestone!" said Reyna. "It is really exciting to see my own works displayed alongside all of the others. I really enjoy being a part of the art community at Lone Star and connecting with people who have similar interests and passions."
Over 70 entries were submitted by LSC-University Park students and judged by Hugo Perez, a first-generation Salvadoran American and local multidisciplinary artist. In addition to choosing 30 art pieces to showcase, Perez also selected four award winners.
Best of Show:
- Magda Knop, "Fata Morgana," acrylic pigment
Awards of Merit:
- Noi Carrasco, "George Harrison, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, and Ringo Starr," oil and acrylic
- Emma Reyna, "The Lament," mixed media on paper
- Audrey Sommer, "Bird Watching," pen and ink
This year's art show promises to be just one milestone in a series of achievements from LSC-University Park art students.
"I dream of seeing myself working in my own studio in the future and inspiring others," said Reyna. "I'd love to be able to sell my works and have more on display. As long as I am working creatively, I will feel like I am fulfilling my purpose and doing what I enjoy."
Winners of the art show were announced during the opening reception and juror talk on Wednesday, April 12; each winner will also receive a studio art scholarship from the college.
If you want to view the Student Art Show, it is located in the Division of Arts & Humanities Art Gallery in building 12.1 through May 5, 2023.
“LSC has given me many opportunities to showcase my work as well as learn so many new skills,” said Reyna. “I was able to use oil paints for the first time which is something I’ve always wanted to do. I have definitely been able to broaden my artistic abilities. My professor, Kari Breitigam, has been such a wonderful teacher! I love exchanging thoughts and ideas with my peers because it makes me feel more inspired to create.”
