Three Lone Star College-CyFair students in The Honors College at LSC-CyFair were recently selected as semifinalists of the highly competitive Jack Kent Cooke (JKC) Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, which provides finalists up to $55,000 up to three years toward completing their bachelor’s degree.
Mykhailo Mazalevskyi, Minh Thu Nguyen and Amrin Vaid are among 17 students across the LSC system named JKC semifinalists. This year’s 459 semifinalists were chosen from a pool of more than 1,700 applicants attending 215 community colleges in 38 states. The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation scholarship covers a substantial share of educational expenses including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees, up to three years at four-year colleges or universities.
These LSC-CyFair semifinalists agree that receiving this prestigious scholarship would alleviate stress and worry of financial limitations and obstacles on their academic path allowing them to focus on their studies as they follow their dreams.
“I wish to understand more about designing reasonable economic policies and learn how they will affect local communities,” said Mazalevskyi, whose current dream is to pursue an economics degree at The University of Texas at Austin, specifically the Business and Public Policy Certificate Program.
Nguyen, also interested in attending UT-Austin, said “Knowing that my education is financially taken care of would bring significant relief and present an opportunity to focus more of my time and energy on studying Biomedical Engineering, researching and developing accessible, affordable medical devices.”
Vaid, the first in her family to attend college in United States, said “I would like to pursue a career in elementary education because I want to be there for children the way my teachers and counselors were there for me, with unrelenting empathy.”
Since 2012, LSC has had 29 students, 5 of which were from LSC-CyFair, awarded the prestigious JKC scholarship. Finalists will be announced this May.
Currently, registration is under way for summer and fall classes at LoneStar.edu/Registration or go to LoneStar.edu/openhouse for details on LSC’s April 11 open houses, which will also provide information on registration, admissions, campus life, college resources and more.
