Lone Star College-CyFair’s Liam Blakeway was recently named an Oberndorf Scholar, one of only seven students to receive the international Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society award this spring.
“The scholarship has had a profound impact on my studies and ambitions. It has given me a newfound optimism that I can reach my goal of working in a hospital and bringing cheer to people as they recuperate,” said Blakeway, future radiographer. “This award is proof that if you stay focused and determined, you will be rewarded for your efforts.”
The Oberndorf Lifeline to Completion Scholarship helps Phi Theta Kappa members overcome unanticipated financial barriers preventing the completion of their first college credential, associate degree, or certificate.
The $1,500 scholarship is named for its benefactors, Rosemary and Lou Oberndorf. A member of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation Board of Trustees, Lou co-founded METI, a world leader in medical education technology whose products are used in many community colleges as well as in the world’s leading medical schools.
Blakeway was an international student seeking a fresh start in life when he enrolled in 2021 at LSC-CyFair. He overcame fear, pain and anxiety related to the aftermath of the pandemic, two near-death experiences, and pursuit of an associate degree as a non-traditional student with a South African accent. And while at LSC-CyFair, he found a family who helped him gain healing, inspiration and confidence to achieve success.
Now Blakeway will be graduating this May with plans to remain at LSC-CyFair another two years to earn an Associate of Applied Science degree in Medical Radiologic Technology. In the meantime, he is not only serving as president of the college’s Beta Lambda Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, but he is currently campaigning for Phi Theta Kappa International Presidency.
