This spring, the Lone Star College-CyFair Government Department will host two engaging conversations on current political hot topics in a hybrid format enabling participants to attend in person and virtually.
“We are excited to offer two more Village Square forums inviting all those in attendance to engage in civil discourse on controversial topics,” said Professor Miranda Ashworth. “At each event, experts on the topic with various viewpoints and backgrounds will present brief remarks on the topic before opening the conversation to all attendees.”
The March 2 event, set from 11:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. and titled The Village Square: “Is This Constitutional?", delves into the constitutionality of several scenarios such as “Is it constitutional for the U.S. federal government to require a negative COVID test for U.S. citizens to re-enter the country?” or “Is it constitutional for a person facing felony charges to run for federal office?”
Ken Abbott, a University of Houston Constitutional Law Professor and Pre-law Advisor, will join LSC-CyFair’s Billy Justus, who teaches government and is a University of Houston Ph.D. student specializing in U.S. federal courts, in facilitating this discussion.
The April 13 event, from 1:30 p.m. – 3 p.m. and titled The Village Square: “Recession and The Crypto Chaos”, provides an opportunity for discussion on crypto currency from both a domestic and international perspective. Topics include economic policies of crypto currency, the impact of crypto exchange as it relates to campaigning elected representatives as well as the pros and cons of Web3 applications and digital currencies in the developing world.
Serving as facilitators at this discussion will be LSC-CyFair faculty Jinu Abraham and Nick Gera, who teach government, and Shawn Miller, who teaches accounting.
Community members are welcome to join The Village Square conversations and light refreshments in person in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall, Room 102 and virtually at LoneStar.edu/IsThisConstitutional in March and LoneStar.edu/CryptoChaos in April.
