Lone Star College-Kingwood graphic design students placed first, second and third at the 41st American Advertising Federation (AAF) of Houston’s 2022 Student Conference and Competition.
“We were the only community college participating at the event, and we competed against 53 four-year universities,” said Zoila Donneys, LSC-Kingwood Visual Communications Professor. “Our students demonstrated that they are not only ready for the higher demands of careers in graphic design but that Lone Star College-Kingwood’s program is competitive with other colleges and universities in Houston and beyond.”
At the AAF of Houston’s Student Conference and Competition, the 10 LSC-Kingwood graphic design students learned from industry professionals, prominent agencies and various brands. Divided into teams, they created a comprehensive marketing, advertising and public relations campaign for the event sponsor, Encore Nights. LSC-Kingwood students who were members of the winning teams were Robbie Barger, first; Duy Pham, second; and Lucas Pettingill and Andreina Cubillan, third.
“My team created mockups of how the company could improve their social media pages, and I took the risk of designing their logo, which paid off in the end,” said Barger. Barger will graduate with a Graphic Design Certification and transfer to Sam Houston State University.
Other LSC-Kingwood students who competed at the AAF of Houston’s 2022 Student Conference and Competition were Ruben Canales, Maggie Callahan, Nuvi Xon, Jordan Torres, Destiny Spearman and Angelena Phavorachit. In addition to the competition, students attended a portfolio and resume review, career fair, and panel discussion on how young professionals landed their first industry positions and future career paths.
The AAF of Houston’s 2022 Student Conference and Competition provided attendees with a two-day, nationally recognized advertising competition and exciting sessions to help students launch a career in the industry.
