Democracy and Defining Fascism is Next Hot Topic Conversation Set Oct. 26 at LSC-CyFair

The LSC-CyFair Government Department hosts Village Square discussion forums on political hot topicsThe Lone Star College-CyFair Government Department hosts another opportunity to engage in a political hot topic conversation at the Oct. 26 event titled The Village Square: "Semi-Fascist: What Does That Even Mean?"

Following a successful special summer series helping bring awareness to important political and social issues from guns in America and Supreme Court rulings to freedom of speech and book banning, this fall event addresses recent political struggles regarding ideologies that many feel may threaten democracy.

Following a short presentation. LSC-CyFair’s Miranda Ashworth, Patrick Barton and Angela Bell, government, speech/communication and history faculty respectively, will facilitate this round table, interactive discussion with attendees.

The approach for an engaging and respectful discussion will center around the following points:

  1. the difficulties in defining fascism and the term’s historical origins;
  2. intentions and outcomes of using the term in contemporary political communication;
  3. the effects of imagery and media coverage on public perception; and
  4. the political use of terminology like “fascism or semi-fascist,” what are the related risks and implications?

Community members are welcome to join this conversation from 1:30 p.m. - 3 p.m. in the Center for the Arts Recital Hall, Room 102.

There is still time to register for fall 8-week to 14-week options of Next Start classes beginning Oct. 26. Go to LoneStar.edu/nextstartcyfair for information.
