Now that school is back in session, be sure to check out Lone Star College-CyFair’s visual and performing arts season to add a little cultural fun to the semester.
Each year, LSC-CyFair’s theatre season features diverse productions of classic, family fare, Broadway and experimental theatre.
This year, the Drama Department is hosting “A Season of Shakespeare” that began with family-friendly summer play “A Ruff Guide to Shakespeare” as an introduction to world’s greatest playwrights, William Shakespeare. The celebration continues this fall with an October comedy in which a rag tag cast of 7 attempt to perform 38 roles in the play “The Curate Shakespeare, As You Like It.” In November, they take on the most iconic play in Shakespeare’s canon, the tragedy “Hamlet.”
Annual choral and music performances feature the college’s pop and concert choirs, symphony and jazz bands, and string orchestra with an array of visiting artists.
Dr. Paulo Gomes begins his inaugural season leading the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir in an October performance. This November, Houston Jazz legend Malcolm Harris leads the student ensemble in an evening of jazz standards from blues to contemporary. In December, audiences will enjoy music from around the world and travel through time with the beautiful sounds of the college’s choral program as well as be entertained with colorful music inspired by folk dances and classic ballet in the orchestra’s “Symphonic Dances.”
For those interested in visual arts, the Bosque Gallery provides exhibition opportunities to view original artwork by LSC-CyFair’s talented and creative students and faculty as well as professional artists. Student, faculty, staff and community exhibits displayed are in a variety of mediums such as ceramics, acrylic, oil, watercolor, metal and photography
The gallery’s exhibition season opened this month with an evolving art installation on display through Sept. 29, involving viewer participation and writing, titled “The Forest” featuring Mari Omori, a Houston multimedia artist and educator with Japanese roots, and her former student T.C. Anderson, now writer and collaborator.
The art season continues in October with “Savage Bayou” featuring Roslyn Dupré, a multidisciplinary artist who works with humble materials and traditional craftsmanship to fashion sewn papers and (un)useful tools. The fall semester and gallery exhibition conclude with the “Student Art Showcase” in November with an awards ceremony and many pieces available for purchase at reasonable prices.
