The Lone Star College-CyFair Diversity Committee provides three opportunities to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month with a series of presentations featuring journalist Russell Contreras and LSC-CyFair Professors Stephanie Krueger and John Telles.
“Our committee’s primary goal is to promote awareness surrounding issues pertaining to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We hope students, staff, faculty and community members alike will find value in the unique perspectives our presenters will share,” said Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, the LSC-CyFair Diversity Committee Chair. “We are also excited to co-host the National Hispanic Heritage Month events with the college’s Teaching and Learning Center, allowing the events to be counted as professional development opportunities for our employees.”
Contreras, who covers race, ethnicity, immigration, politics, and Latino issues as Race and Justice Reporter at Axios, kicks off the interactive conversations series with his "Malo-info: The State of Latino Journalism, Disinformation and the Future Browning of the U.S." presentation at 2 p.m. Sept. 21 in the Center for Academic and Student Affairs (CASA) Room 110.
Before joining Axios, where he is also co-author of the Axios Latino newsletter, Contreras was a member of the Race and Ethnicity Team for The Associated Press and a former reporter for the Boston Globe. This descendant of Mexican American civil rights leaders in Houston is currently working on a book about President John F. Kennedy's last night and his meeting with Mexican American civil rights activists.
Krueger, who teaches Spanish, will present “Building Bridges: Serving the LSC Hispanic Population” at 3 p.m. Sept. 27 in the Technology Building (TECH) Room 111.
Telles, who teaches Math, will conclude these National Hispanic Heritage Month conversations with his "Hispanic Contributions in STEM: Past, Present and Future" presentation in October.
