Lone Star College-CyFair’s Counseling Department welcomes Dr. Ned Strauss for the “Talk Saves Lives” presentation Sept. 7.
Dr. Strauss, who holds a Ph.D. in clinical psychology and represents the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), will share warning signs, prevention through starting a conversation, and advocacy for suicide prevention.
Suicide affects all ages and suicide is the 12th leading cause of death in the United States, according to the AFSP, a voluntary health organization with a mission of saving lives and bringing hope to all affected.
Up to 44% of college students have reported symptoms of depression and anxiety. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among students in U.S. colleges and universities in Texas. The demographic age-range experiencing the highest percentage increase in deaths by suicide is 15- to 24-year-olds. (These and related statistics can be found on the Center for Disease Control and World Health Organization sites.)
“Our office provides personal counseling in addition to academic and career counseling,” said LSC-CyFair Counselor Vivian Kurday. “We are here to help students if they are feeling overwhelmed or have been impacted by suicide in any way.”
The free “Talk Saves Lives” event is open to the community and will be held from noon – 1:30 p.m. in the Conference Center (CENT) Rooms 151-152.
