The Honors College at Lone Star College provides pathway to a bright future

Leah Sullivan’s higher education journey began early in life.

“I started at Lone Star College my freshman year of high school,” said Sullivan. “I was looking for a place to further my education that was close by and the resources and accessibility of Lone Star College appealed to me.”

Sullivan was home-schooled while taking dual credit classes at LSC-Tomball. Dual credit allows students to enroll in a college course and receives simultaneous academic credit for the course from both the college and high school. It was while taking classes that Sullivan was introduced to The Honors College at LSC by two of her faculty mentors, as well as fellow classmates.

“My experiences at The Honors College prepared me incredibly well to attend a four-year university,” said Sullivan. “I loved how the small class sizes and one-on-one mentorship with faculty allowed me to flourish and figure out what I wanted to do next.”

Sullivan studied Biology while attending LSC and will attend the University of Texas at Dallas with a Eugene McDermott Scholarship which provides a student required tuition and fees, stipends for housing during their first year and leadership training. Sullivan plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in Data Science with a minor in Molecular Biology and is also interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Bioinformatics or a related field.

“Students like Leah are provided academic options while at The Honors College that enrich their total college experience,” said Katharine Caruso, Ph.D., Associate Vice Chancellor, Honors and International Education. “These opportunities include travel, off-campus educational and cultural events, service-learning opportunities, conferences and special seminars.”
