Dr. Claire Phillips, Lone Star College-CyFair Dean of Instruction, Science and Engineering, was granted an International Education Administrators (IEA) award to study global education in France through the Fulbright Scholar Program. IEA awards are designed to help U.S. international education professionals and senior higher education officials create connections with their counterparts and higher education systems of other countries.
“Lone Star College has strategically targeted six countries including France with the goal of increasing international collaborations by the end of 2022,” said Stephen C. Head, Ph.D., LSC Chancellor. “This award will allow Dr. Phillips to help develop internationalized science courses to benefit our students, including those attending The Honors College.”
The Honors College at Lone Star College takes students beyond the classroom with opportunities to participate in Fellows International Capstone opportunities, off-campus educational and cultural events, service-learning opportunities, conferences and special seminars.
“I originally heard about the Fulbright opportunity for administrators through the Community Colleges for International Development organization,” said Phillips. “I am looking forward to establishing long-term relationships with partnering universities so as to expand international education at Lone Star College.”
LSC is the host college for Community Colleges for International Development (CCID) which helps further international initiatives and develop globally competent workers. The CCID and The Honors College held an application workshop for faculty and administrators who were interested in becoming Fulbright scholars.
While in college, Phillips participated in coursework at the University of Avignon in France which prepares students for success in a global community through the study of European and Mediterranean history, languages, cultures and contemporary issues.
“Lone Star College has been able to foster numerous international initiatives through past collaborative efforts with France,” said Katharine Caruso, Ph.D., LSC Associate Vice Chancellor Honors and International Education.” We are so excited about this opportunity and look forward to Dr. Phillips sharing what she learned with us.”
Dr. John J. Theis, Professor of Political Science and Director of the LSC-Kingwood Center for Civic Engagement, was also named a Fulbright scholar earlier this year.
“I consider this quite an honor and believe that this award also shows how interested the Fulbright organization is in working more closely with community colleges and the many underrepresented students we have who would not normally be able to have an internationalized experience while in college,” said Phillips.
