Lone Star College and Johnson Controls celebrate National Skilled Trades Day

Lone Star College and Johnson Controls have partnered to provide career pathways for the next generation of building technology innovators.

“It’s appropriate to recognize this partnership on National Skilled Trades Day,” said Nicole Robinson Gauthier, CFRE, LSC Foundation Executive Director. “We are so grateful for the support Johnson Controls has provided for our students and look forward to continuing the goal of producing a well-trained workforce.”

U.S. National Skilled Trades Day is observed annually on the first Wednesday in May.

LSC received $100,000 as part of the Johnson Controls Community College Partnership program in 2021 which aims to equip students with in-demand knowledge and skills that will support employment and a pathway for life-long careers upon graduation.

“The fact that Johnson Controls believes in me by investing in my growth is another reason for me to keep pushing forward,” said Joseluis Calderon, LSC student who was awarded a scholarship for the HVAC program. “I believe that I will accomplish my goal because I want this more than anything.”

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports nearly eight million skilled-labor jobs were lost from the workforce during the pandemic. About half have been filled, but an estimated four million vacancies remain in industries responsible for more transportation, construction and mechanical needs nationwide.

Introduced in 2021, the Johnson Controls Community College Partnership Program funds $15 million over the span of five years to non-profit community colleges throughout North America in support of their HVAC, fire, security and digital academic programs.

Since its inception in 1991, LSC Foundation has provided over $13 million in scholarships to nearly 13,000 students, as well as more than $4 million in program support. The mission of the LSC Foundation is to change lives through student scholarships and quality educational programs achieved by excellence in relationship building, fundraising and investment management.
