Lone Star College-CyFair Diversity Committee’s spring conversations continue with in March with an award-winning Native American Washington Post reporter and a foremost transgender advocate with her signature “ask-me-anything” Q&A sessions.
“Join us next month as we welcome Dana Hedgpeth March 7 and Jessica Lynn March 9 for two interactive and empowering conversations,” said Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, chair of the LSC-CyFair Diversity Committee. “We are excited to have these two prominent women share about their unique personal experiences while educating us on truths as it relates to issues facing indigenous people and the transgender community in our country.”
Hedgpeth will provide an informative discussion in a presentation titled “Think you know the real story of Thanksgiving? Or what 'real' Native Americans look like in the 21st century?” This Native American journalist has 25 years of experience at nationally recognized newspapers including the Washington Post and Baltimore Sun. In addition, she is a member of the Haliwa-Saponi tribe, married, and has two daughters who dance with her at pow wows along the East Coast.
In her presentation the “The Tipping Point”, Lynn speaks about her journey to become a transgender woman and the first parent in U.S. history to have their name removed from their own child's birth certificate. Through a dynamic, humorous, yet honest speaking style, this world-renowned advocate and educator has dedicated her life to spreading awareness and acceptance worldwide with hopes to improve understanding of what it means to be transgender.
Both March events, which are part of LSC-CyFair's Women’s History Month activities, will be held through WebEx. The Lynn event will also be simultaneously held in room 110 of the Center for Academic and Student Affairs (CASA) building.
