With a goal to break their previous more than $1,000 raised in one night effort, Lone Star College-CyFair’s Performance Troupe presents “The Vagina Monologues” Feb. 18 with 100% of proceeds going to her VOICE, a local women’s empowerment organization.
The founder of her VOICE, Dr. Shana Lewis, established the non-profit with a mission to end domestic violence by empowering women to live healthy lives through mentorship and education. While helping an LSC-CyFair student organization raise funds for a worthwhile cause, Performance Troupe President Sabrina Levenson thinks audiences will also gain much from the Friday evening experience.
“The piece is meant to give women a voice to discuss topics like equality, sexuality and intimacy in a safe environment - free from judgment, shame and ridicule,” said Levenson, who is directing the fund-raising play. “It is my hope that the students performing these pieces connect with their audience, and give them that freedom to express themselves, and the confidence to find their own inner strength.”
Overseeing the production featuring LSC-CyFair students is Professor Joseph Urick of the college’s Drama Department. He said V’s (formerly known as Eve Ensler) play “The Vagina Monologues” is easily one of his favorite plays.
“It is witty, charming, poignant, but never self-righteous or victimizing,” he said. “Regardless of one’s gender identity, there is something to be discovered, and we can all find support and encouragement through these beautiful words.”
Tickets are $10 for general admission for this 7:30 p.m. Performance Troupe fund-raising production will be held in the Main Stage Theatre, located in the Center for the Arts at 9191 Barker Cypress. Masks and social distancing are encouraged, but not required. Performers will not be masked.
