Mark the calendar to join upcoming informative and interactive conversations the Lone Star College-CyFair Diversity Committee hosts this spring on issues pertaining to diversity, equity and inclusion.
The first virtual talk in this series features James Hoyte presenting “The Origins and History of the Environmental Justice Movement” at 9 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16.
Prior to his recent retirement as a senior administrator and lecturer in environmental policy at Harvard University, Hoyte had a 20-year career as a lawyer, public policy consultant and government official, including six years as Massachusetts Secretary of Environmental Affairs. He has published articles in the fields of environmental policy and management and serves on the boards of directors on numerous environmental and civic organizations.
The second virtual talk in this series features Dr. Laurette Foster presenting “Minorities in STEM and Education” at 10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24.
Dr. Foster is currently a senior professor of mathematics and Director for the Center for Teaching and Excellence at Prairie View A&M University. In addition, she has served as a reviewer and chair for projects submitted to the National Science Foundation and held a five-year appointment with the Educational Testing Service developing questions for the SAT Mathematics Subject Test. While professionally focused on interdisciplinary teaching and learning, in her community, she is an active member of the Houston Ensemble Theater Guild.
“Mr. Hoyte's talk will highlight environmental issues pertaining to Harris County as well,” said Dr. Jennifer Jenkins, chair of the LSC-CyFair Diversity Committee. “Dr. Foster's talk will show how far we've come in promoting STEM and education to the next generation of leaders and the progress which still needs to be made."
The Lone Star College Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is co-sponsoring this series. For links to both of these February talks, which are part of the LSC Black History Month activities, as well as to hear recordings of previous events, go to LoneStar.edu/cyfair-diversity.
