The month of February has been designated as Black History Month to honor and celebrate the triumphs and struggles of African Americans throughout U.S. history. The observance began in 1926 when Carter G. Woodson specified a time to educate people about black history.
“Black History Month began as a way to remember the incredible contributions African Americans have made throughout the history of this country,” said Carlecia Wright, Lone Star College Chief Diversity Officer. “This commemoration helps provide a deeper understanding by not only African Americans, but all people.”
LSC joins the celebration with a series of Black History Month events at each of our campuses during the month, including a Fireside Chat with Dr. Melanye Price, an Endowed Professor of Political Science at Prairie View A&M University and principle investigator for their African American Studies Initiative.
“Dr. Price is a dynamic speaker who was the 2017 Black History Month lecturer for the U.S. Embassy in Germany where she lectured at universities and community organizations across the country,” said Wright.
Other events taking place in February include art shows, workshops, movies, fashion shows, food tastings, comedian performances and more.
